Decision Quiz: Which Track Suits You?

Answer 5 questions to get a personalized recommendation.

1. Do you need a monthly living stipend from the scholarship?

2. Do you have a connection with a specific Chinese professor or university?

3. How important is flexibility in university choice?

4. Is your country's Chinese Embassy known to be efficient with CSC applications?

5. Are you a PhD applicant with published research?

Recommendation: Type A (Embassy Route)

Based on your answers, the Embassy route is your best bet. You'll get full funding including the monthly stipend, and you can list up to 3 university choices. Start by contacting your local Chinese Embassy for their specific deadline and requirements.

Recommendation: Type B (University Route)

With your professor connection and PhD profile, applying directly through the university makes sense. Remember that Type B usually does NOT include a monthly stipend — confirm with the university if they add their own.

Recommendation: Apply to Both Routes

Your profile could work with either track. The smart move is to apply to both: 1–2 Type A applications through your embassy PLUS 1 Type B application directly to your target university. This maximizes your chances. You can hold a maximum of 3 parallel applications.

Embassy Route (Type A) Explained

How It Works

You apply through the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your home country. The embassy shortlists candidates based on their country's quota (which varies — Pakistan and Thailand have large quotas, small European nations have fewer spots). Your application is then forwarded to CSC in Beijing for final review. The entire process is free.

Country Quotas Matter

Each country has a fixed number of Type A spots. If your country has 50 spots and 500 people apply, that's a 10% rate. If your country has 200 spots and 600 apply, that's 33%. Your real competition is other applicants from your country, not global applicants.

You Can List 3 Universities

Type A lets you rank up to 3 university preferences. If your first choice doesn't accept you, CSC may assign you to your second or third choice. This is a significant advantage over Type B, where you're locked into one university.

University Route (Type B) Explained

How It Works

You apply directly to a specific Chinese university's international admissions office. The university reviews your application, ranks you among their applicants, and nominates you to CSC. CSC then makes the final funding decision. The university provides an "agency number" for the online portal.

The Stipend Problem

The biggest catch: Type B typically does NOT include a monthly stipend from CSC. You get tuition waiver and accommodation, but for monthly expenses you either need savings or the university must offer its own supplementary stipend. Not all universities do. Always confirm directly with the university's international office.

Best for PhD Applicants

Type B is particularly strong for PhD candidates who already have a relationship with a supervisor. If a professor wants you in their lab, the university will rank you highly. Some top universities like Tsinghua and Peking University also add their own generous stipends on top.

The Optimal Strategy: Apply to Both

CSC allows you to submit up to 2 Type A + 1 Type B = 3 total parallel applications in the same cycle. They are reviewed independently. If you're accepted through multiple routes, you choose which offer to take.
