VPN Installation Reminder
This cannot be stressed enough: install a VPN on your phone, laptop, and tablet BEFORE you leave your home country. Once in China, VPN download sites are blocked. Without a VPN, you cannot access Google, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, or most Western services. See our Great Firewall guide for details.
First Week in China
Day 1: Register at University
Go to the international student office. Bring ALL original documents. Complete registration and get student ID.
Day 1-2: Police Registration (24-hour rule)
Register at the local police station within 24 hours. University usually arranges group registration.
Week 1: Bank Account + SIM Card
Open a Chinese bank account (ICBC or Bank of China). Get a Chinese SIM card. Set up WeChat Pay.
Week 2-4: Medical Exam + Residence Permit
Complete the second medical examination. Apply for residence permit (must be done within 30 days of arrival).
