CSC Scholarship Amount & Funding

Full breakdown of what CSC actually covers, what it doesn't, and why your city choice determines whether you'll live comfortably or struggle.

These stipend amounts are for Type A (Embassy route) scholarships only. Type B typically does NOT include a monthly stipend.

Type B Warning: Usually NO Monthly Stipend

If you're applying through the university route (Type B), CSC typically covers tuition and accommodation only. There is no monthly living stipend from CSC. Some universities add their own stipend (CNY 1,000–2,000/month), but this is NOT guaranteed. Always confirm directly with the university.

City Tier Living Costs

Your city choice has a massive impact on whether your stipend covers your expenses. Tier 1 cities can consume your entire stipend on rent alone if you live off-campus.

Tier 1: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen

CNY 3,000–5,000/month living expenses

Expensive
FoodCNY 1,200–2,000
TransportCNY 200–400
Off-Campus Rent (if applicable)CNY 2,000–4,000
Phone/InternetCNY 100–200

PhD stipend (CNY 3,500) barely covers food + transport in Tier 1. Off-campus living here requires additional funds.

Tier 2: Wuhan, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Xi'an

CNY 2,000–3,500/month living expenses

Moderate
FoodCNY 800–1,500
TransportCNY 100–250
Off-Campus RentCNY 1,000–2,500

Stipend mostly covers expenses. Comfortable if you stay on campus. Tight but manageable off-campus.

Tier 3+: Smaller Cities (Lanzhou, Kunming, etc.)

CNY 1,200–2,000/month living expenses

Affordable
FoodCNY 500–1,000
TransportCNY 50–150
Off-Campus RentCNY 500–1,200

Stipend covers everything comfortably. You can even save money. Best value for money, though fewer international amenities.

Off-Campus Housing Subsidy

If you choose to live off campus (or if on-campus housing is unavailable), CSC provides a monthly subsidy. But it rarely covers actual rent.

CNY 700
Monthly off-campus subsidy (Bachelor's / Master's)
CNY 1,000
Monthly off-campus subsidy (PhD / Research Scholar)

Reality check: In Beijing or Shanghai, a basic room costs CNY 2,000–4,000/month. The CNY 700–1,000 subsidy covers 25–50% of actual costs. In Tier 3 cities, the subsidy can cover most of a basic room. This is a major factor in choosing where to study.
