CSC Medical Examination Requirements

China has some of the strictest medical requirements of any scholarship. Failure means scholarship loss. Here is every test you need and every trap to avoid.

Why This Page Matters

The CSC medical exam is not a formality. It is a comprehensive physical examination that can disqualify you. You must pass TWO medical exams: one before application (in your home country) and a second upon arrival in China. If you fail either one, your scholarship is terminated. No exceptions, no appeals.

Complete Test List

You must use the official "Foreigner Physical Examination Form" provided by CSC. All tests below are mandatory.

Blood Tests

  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • HIV/AIDS test
  • Syphilis (RPR/VDRL)
  • Hepatitis B surface antigen
  • Liver function (ALT/AST)
  • Kidney function (creatinine, BUN)
  • Blood glucose

Other Tests

  • Chest X-ray (tuberculosis screening)
  • ECG (electrocardiogram)
  • Abdominal ultrasound (liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys)
  • Urinalysis
  • Vision and hearing test
  • Blood pressure and heart rate
  • General physical examination

Critical Rules

Government Hospital Only

The medical exam must be conducted at a government-designated hospital. Private clinics and regular hospitals are NOT accepted in many countries. Check with your Chinese Embassy for approved facilities.

6-Month Validity

Results are valid for 6 months from the exam date. Time it carefully: too early and it expires before review; too late and you miss the deadline. Best timing: 3-4 months before submission.

Second Exam Upon Arrival

Within 2-4 weeks of arriving in China, you MUST undergo a second medical examination at a designated Chinese hospital. If results differ significantly from your home country exam, or if any disqualifying condition is found, your scholarship will be terminated. This is non-negotiable.

Conditions That Disqualify

HIV positive, active tuberculosis, active syphilis, severe liver conditions, serious heart conditions, and certain mental health conditions will result in automatic disqualification. Some conditions like controlled hypertension or managed diabetes may be acceptable — confirm with the embassy.
