Visa & Residence Permit Guide
Once accepted, you'll need a student visa to enter Turkey and then convert it to a residence permit. The process varies dramatically by city, and bureaucratic delays are the norm rather than the exception.
Step-by-Step Process
Get Student Visa Before Departure
Apply at your nearest Turkish embassy/consulate with your acceptance letter. Processing takes 2-6 weeks. Some embassies are notoriously slow. Apply immediately after receiving your acceptance.
Enter Turkey on Student Visa
Your student visa is typically valid for 30-90 days. Within this period, you must apply for a residence permit. Do NOT let your visa expire.
Apply for Residence Permit (Ikamet)
Go to the local Göç Ιdaresi (Immigration Office) in your city. You'll need: passport, photos, acceptance letter, proof of address (from KYK or landlord), health insurance document.
Biometric Appointment
You'll receive an appointment date for fingerprinting and photo. This can be weeks to months after your initial application. Your interim receipt serves as legal residence proof.
Receive Residence Permit Card
The plastic ikamet card is mailed to your address. With this, you can open a bank account, get a tax number, and access services. Processing varies: Istanbul 1-4 weeks, smaller cities up to 3 months.

Immigration Office Reports
Some scholars, particularly from African countries, have reported discrimination and rudeness at immigration offices. While not universal, these experiences include:
- • Being sent away multiple times for "missing documents" that weren't actually required
- • Staff refusing to communicate in English even when they can
- • Significantly longer wait times compared to other nationalities
- • Inconsistent document requirements between visits
Tips: Bring a Turkish-speaking friend or your TB coordinator. Have all documents in a clear folder. Be patient and polite but firm about your rights. Contact YTB if you face serious issues.
What You Can't Do Without Ikamet
You need ikamet to open an account at most Turkish banks
Prepaid SIM cards work but registered plans need ikamet
Landlords legally require ikamet for formal contracts
Stipend may be delayed until bank account is set up
