Türkiye Burslari Dormitory (KYK) Reality 2027

The truth about KYK dormitories for Türkiye Scholarships scholars. Food quality, overcrowding, safety issues, and private alternatives.

KYK Dormitories: The Full Truth

The "free dormitory" is one of Türkiye Burslari's biggest selling points. But KYK (Kredi ve Yurtlar Kurumu) dormitories are a far cry from what most international students expect. Here's the reality scholars on the ground have reported.

Reported Issues

These reports come from current and former TB scholars across multiple KYK dormitories in Turkey. Not every dorm has every issue, but these are widespread enough to warrant preparation.

Multiple scholars have reported finding foreign objects in food, including hair and insects. The food is mass-produced for thousands of students and the quality varies significantly between dormitories. Vegetarian and halal-specific options are limited in some locations. Many scholars end up cooking for themselves or eating out, which adds significant cost.
Rooms designed for 4 students sometimes house 6-8. Personal space is minimal. Shared bathrooms and showers serve entire floors. During peak enrollment periods, some students sleep on mattresses in common areas until rooms become available.
Fire safety incidents have been reported in several KYK buildings. In some locations, fire exits were blocked or alarms non-functional. Elevator accidents have occurred. Electrical issues are common in older buildings. Security is generally present at entrances, but theft during breaks (when dorms are emptied) has been reported by multiple scholars.
During semester breaks, KYK dorms require students to vacate. Your belongings are stored in the room but rooms may be opened for maintenance or new students. Multiple scholars report returning after breaks to find electronics, money, and personal items missing. Keep valuables with you or in a locked suitcase.
Many KYK dormitories have a midnight curfew. Guests of the opposite gender are not allowed inside. Noise restrictions after 10 PM. Alcohol is strictly prohibited. Internet is available but often slow and filtered. These rules can feel restrictive, especially for graduate students used to more independence.

Private Alternatives: Cost Comparison

Private Dorm3,000–6,000 TLBetter quality, fewer rulesExpensive, deposits

Solo Apartment8,000–20,000 TLFull privacy and controlFar exceeds stipend

*KYK food fees of ~1,200 TL/month are deducted from your stipend. So "free" housing actually costs you money from your already-limited stipend.

Tips for Surviving KYK

Bring a Good Lock

A quality padlock for your suitcase and locker is essential. Keep electronics and valuables secured, especially during breaks.

Invest in Earplugs & Eye Mask

With 4-8 roommates on different schedules, sleep quality suffers. Quality earplugs and an eye mask are lifesavers.

Learn to Cook

KYK kitchens exist but are often basic. Learn simple meals. A portable electric cooker (if allowed) gives you food independence.

Build Relationships Early

Your dormmates can become lifelong friends. Make an effort to socialize, especially with Turkish students. They'll help you navigate bureaucracy and learn the language faster.

Report Issues Formally

If you encounter safety or hygiene issues, report them in writing to the dorm administration and your TB coordinator. Written complaints are taken more seriously than verbal ones.

Consider Switching After TOMER

Many scholars stay in KYK during the TOMER year (when finances are tightest) and move to a shared apartment once they start their degree and can potentially find part-time work.
