Türkiye Scholarships: Complete Guide 2027

Türkiye Bursları 2027 is for international students applying to Turkish universities — tuition, a monthly stipend, a dorm place, health insurance and one year of TÖMER Turkish. Here is the honest version, in reading order.

Türkiye Bursları at a Glance

Türkiye Scholarships (Türkiye Bursları) is the Turkish government's fully funded scholarship for international students, run by YTB. It covers associate, bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees, plus short research stays, at more than 200 Turkish universities. Unlike most scholarships, it also places you at a university: you rank up to 12 programmes and the programme decides where you go.

The package is generous on paper: full tuition, a monthly stipend, a dormitory place, general health insurance, a one-off flight at the start and end of your studies, and a free year of Turkish at a TÖMER language centre. Its alumni network has more than 150,000 members in 160 countries.

2027 cycle

The general application window is 10 January – 20 February every year, so the 2027 round should run 10 January – 20 February 2027. YTB usually posts the official 2027 announcement in late December, so check the official site before you apply.

The Real Deal: Pain Points Nobody Tells You

Türkiye Bursları sounds amazing on paper. Nearly 200,000 people applied in 2026, a record. Here is what they run into.

  1. 1
Massive competition — about 200K applications for ~5,000 places

YTB says it funds about 5,000 international students a year, so that's roughly a 2.5% acceptance rate by our estimate. For perspective, Harvard admits under 4%. You're competing against students from 170+ countries. From Nigeria alone, thousands apply for what scholars estimate is about a dozen spots. The numbers are brutal, and most applicants don't realise how selective this really is until they get rejected.

  2. 2
The 6–7 month wait after applying

You apply in January–February and don't hear about interview invites until April–June. Final results? Early August. That's over half a year of uncertainty. Many applicants put their lives on hold, turn down other opportunities, and then get a rejection email with zero feedback.

  3. 3
    University placement roulette

You list 12 preferences, but there's no guarantee you'll get any of them. Many scholars end up in small Anatolian cities they've never heard of, at universities with limited English resources. You can transfer once, but it's an uphill battle. Your dream of studying in Istanbul? Statistically unlikely.

  4. 4
Compulsory TÖMER year — one full year learning Turkish

Even if your programme is in English, you normally spend a full year at TÖMER (a university Turkish language centre) first and must reach C1. By an unofficial figure shared among scholars (not from YTB), 37% still struggle with academic Turkish after this year. If you haven't reached C1 by the end of a second year, your scholarship is cancelled.

  5. 5
    Interview unpredictability

You might get only one week's notice. The format varies: some get friendly chats, others face tough panels. Undergraduate applicants sit a 30-question maths, geometry and logic test in 60 minutes. Interview cities may not be convenient for you.

  6. 6
    Stipend vs. Turkish inflation

The stipend has been raised to 9,500 TL a month for master's students, but at about 49 TL to the US dollar (September 2026) that is roughly $194. Istanbul rent alone can cost 10,000+ TL. The lira was 1.8 to the dollar in 2013, and the stipend has not kept pace with years of high inflation. Many scholars rely on family support or find informal work.

  7. 7
    KYK dormitory reality

A free dormitory sounds great until you experience KYK. Scholars report food quality issues (foreign objects found in meals), overcrowding, fire safety concerns, elevator accidents and theft during breaks. Many move out and pay from their own pocket, defeating the "free housing" benefit.

  8. 8
    Common rejection mistakes

Plagiarised motivation letters (they check), generic "bridge between East and West" clichés, wrong document formats, exceeding the character limit, missing the deadline window and misunderstanding the programme types. Most rejections happen at the document review stage, not the interview.

  9. 9
    Visa and residence permit delays

Getting your residence permit in Istanbul can take 1–4 weeks. In some cities, like Antalya, it stretches to 2–3 months. Some scholars report discrimination at immigration offices. Without a residence permit you can't open a bank account, get a phone plan or access many services.

  10. 10
    Cultural adjustment shock

Turkey's culture is unique and wonderful, but very different from most scholars' home countries. Language barriers persist well beyond TÖMER, social isolation is common, especially in smaller cities, and the bureaucracy can be frustrating. Mental health support is limited and often not in English.

  11. 11
    Medical exam requirements

You need a full medical report including blood tests, a chest X-ray and sometimes vaccination records, translated and in some countries apostilled. In some countries this costs a significant amount and takes weeks. Reports older than 6 months are rejected.

  12. 12
    Application portal confusion

The online portal (tbbs.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr) crashes frequently near the deadline, has confusing field labels and occasionally loses uploads. Many applicants make errors with file sizes or formats, or accidentally submit incomplete applications during server instability.

  13. 13
    The TÖMER-to-academic-Turkish gap

Passing TÖMER C1 doesn't mean you can write academic papers in Turkish. The gap between test Turkish and dense textbooks, theses and fast lectures is enormous. Many scholars in Turkish-medium programmes struggle for 1–2 more years.

Programme Types

Eligibility →

Türkiye Bursları covers every level of study, and each level has its own age limit, minimum grade and stipend. Two-year associate (vocational) degrees follow the bachelor's rules.

ProgrammeDurationAge limitMinimum gradeStipend / month
Associate & bachelor's2–6 years by field, + 1 year TÖMERUnder 2170% (90% for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy)6,500 TL

Two more tracks are easy to confuse. The Merit Scholarship pays twice the regular stipend to applicants with outstanding grades and test scores (for example a 90% average plus a strong SAT, GRE or ALES score and TOEFL/IELTS). The Success Scholarship (Türkiye Başarı Bursu) is something else: a one-year, stipend-only award for international students already studying in Türkiye at their own expense, with its own October–November application window. Details are on the scholarship amount page.
