Commonwealth Scholarship Success Rate: What It Really Means
The headline ~3% rate is misleading. The real competition happens at your nominating body, before the CSC ever sees your application.

The Numbers
The CSC’s 2025–26 business plan targeted 624 new awards across all programmes. Only about 90 were agency-nominated Master’s awards and 53 were PhD awards. For 2027/28 the CSC expects around 180 new Shared Scholarships. PhD Scholarships are limited to 17 countries.
The Two-Hurdle Reality
Pass rate at national level. You compete against 500+ applicants for 10–50 nomination slots. This is where most are eliminated.
Of nominated candidates receive awards. Once you clear Hurdle 1, your chances improve dramatically.
These ranges are estimates; the CSC does not publish country-level success rates, and a nomination is no guarantee of selection.
What Makes Winning Applications
Specific, measurable development impact plans
Name the problem, the community, the scale, and your concrete plan. Vague statements about "helping my country" are rejected.
Clear alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Connect your work to specific SDGs and to one of the CSC's six development themes organically. Don't just name-drop them.
Strong references that address development potential
References must go beyond "good student." They should address your development potential and commitment.
