Common Mistakes That Kill Commonwealth Applications
Most applicants are qualified. Most still get rejected because of entirely preventable errors — here are the six that matter most, and how to fix each.

1. Weak Development Impact Statement
The #1 reason for rejection. "I want to improve education" is not impact.
Fix: Be ruthlessly specific. Name the problem, community, scale, SDG and a concrete action plan with measurable outcomes.
2. Applying Only to the CSC, Not Your Nominating Body
The CSC does not accept direct applications for Master's and PhD awards — you need a nomination too.
Fix: Find your country's nominating body on the CSC website first. Contact them directly for their process and deadline.
3. Missing the Nominating Body Deadline
Fix: Your nominating body's deadline is often weeks earlier than the CSC's (20 October 2026 for 2027/28). Contact them at least 3 months before you expect to apply.
4. Choosing the Wrong Award Type
Fix: Match your career stage to the right award. Use our Award Types quiz.
5. Weak or Generic References
Fix: Brief referees on the CSC's criteria. Share your Development Impact statement with them. Ask them to address your development potential specifically — and make sure their PDFs are uploaded before the deadline.
6. No Return Plan
Fix: The CSC funds people who will go home and create change. Name specific organisations, a timeline and measurable outcomes.
