How to Apply for the Commonwealth Scholarship 2027

The eight steps students from eligible Commonwealth countries must complete for a 2027/28 award — from checking eligibility to results by July 2027.

For Master's and PhD awards you must be nominated through an approved body in your country, as well as submitting your application on the CSC's online system. This guide walks through the entire multi-stage process.

Check your eligibility
Before anything else, confirm you meet the core criteria: citizen of an eligible Commonwealth country, the right academic qualifications, financial need, and commitment to return home. Use our eligibility checker →

Identify your nominating body
Find your country's approved nominating agency (usually the Ministry of Education or University Grants Commission) on the CSC website. Their deadline is often earlier than the CSC deadline — contact them immediately.

Research UK universities and courses
List three university and course preferences, in order — the CSC strongly recommends a second and third choice in case it cannot place you at the first. Choose courses aligned with your country's development needs and your development impact statement. Check university entry requirements and English language scores, and apply for admission in advance — the CSC will not normally change your choices after selection.

Prepare your application
Key documents: the Development Impact Statement (most critical, in four parts), a personal statement, your academic CV and employment history, references from at least two people (uploaded as PDFs by the deadline), and a research proposal plus a supporting statement from a proposed UK supervisor (PhD only). Submit to your nominating body — and the CSC
Submit your completed application to your national nominating body by their deadline (not the CSC deadline). They may require additional documents or forms beyond the standard CSC application. Your CSC application on CSC Central must be in by 16:00 BST on 20 October 2026.

National selection
Your nominating body reviews all applications from your country, may conduct interviews, and selects the strongest candidates to forward to the CSC by December 2026. This is often the most competitive stage.

CSC review
The CSC reviews all nominated candidates from all countries. Panels assess candidate merit (including academic record), the quality of your study plan or research proposal, and potential impact on your home country's development. This happens after nominations arrive in December.

Results and next steps
Results arrive by July 2027, by email. If selected, you are provisionally selected subject to university admission, then receive a Notification of Award and guidance on placement, visa and pre-departure preparation. Read our After Selection guide →
