Visa & Residence Permit Guide

As an SH scholar, the residence permit application fee is waived. But the process has several catch-22 situations and can be stressful. Here's how to navigate it.

Good News: Fee Waived

Stipendium Hungaricum scholars are exempt from the residence permit application fee (normally ~EUR 60). You'll need to present your scholarship award letter as proof.

Residence Permit Process

1

Obtain Entry Visa (Before Arrival)

Apply for a Type D (long-stay) visa at the Hungarian Embassy in your country. Required documents: scholarship award letter, passport, photo, health insurance proof, accommodation proof.

2

Register Address Within 3 Days

After arriving, register your Hungarian address at the local government office. You need your accommodation proof (dormitory letter or rental contract).

3

Apply for Residence Permit

Within 30 days of arrival, apply at the regional immigration office (OIF). Bring all documents, scholarship letter, enrollment confirmation, and accommodation proof.

4

Wait for Processing

Processing takes 1-3 months. You'll receive a temporary residence card and then the permanent one by mail. Your visa allows you to stay legally while waiting.

The Accommodation Catch-22

To get a residence permit, you need to prove accommodation. But to rent privately, many landlords want to see your residence permit. This circular requirement is a genuine problem.

How to Solve It

  • Dormitory residents: Your university provides the accommodation letter. No catch-22.
  • Private renters: Ask your landlord for a signed accommodation letter. Some landlords experienced with international students will provide this.
  • Temporary solution: Use a hostel or Airbnb address initially, then update once you find permanent housing.

Immigration Office Experiences

The immigration offices (OIF) in Hungary have received mixed reviews from international students. Common reported issues:

  • • Very long wait times (4-6 hours is common)
  • • Staff rarely speak English
  • • Multiple visits needed due to missing documents
  • • Some students report discriminatory treatment, particularly towards non-European applicants
  • • Online appointment system frequently crashes

Tips

Bring ALL documents (original + 2 copies of each). Arrive early (before opening). Bring a Hungarian-speaking friend if possible. Stay calm and patient. Document any discriminatory behavior and report it to your university's international office.

Renewal Process

Your residence permit is typically valid for 1-2 years and must be renewed before expiry. Start the renewal process at least 2 months before expiration.

  • • You'll need updated enrollment confirmation from your university
  • • Updated scholarship continuation letter from Tempus
  • • Proof of continued accommodation
  • • Valid passport
  • • Fee still waived for SH scholars
