During Your Scholarship: Rules & Requirements

Winning the scholarship is just the beginning. Maintaining it requires meeting academic standards, attending classes, and following specific rules. Violations can lead to stipend reduction or complete termination.

Academic Requirements

Credit Requirements

  • Minimum 18 credits per semester (average across all semesters)
  • Falling below triggers a warning first, then potential termination
  • PhD students: progress evaluated by doctoral school
  • Must complete Hungarian language course (BA/MA)

What Gets You a Warning

  • Failing more than 2 subjects in a semester
  • Credit average below 18/semester
  • Not enrolling for required courses
  • Falling behind on mandatory Hungarian course

Absence Rules

10+ consecutive days absent

Requires written permission from your university and notification to Tempus. Medical documentation needed for sick leave.

30+ consecutive days absent

Automatic scholarship termination. The only exception is documented medical emergency with hospital records. Even family emergencies may not be accepted without prior approval.

Leaving Hungary during semester

Short trips (weekends, holidays) are fine. Extended travel during the semester requires university approval. Your stipend continues only while you're enrolled and present.

Part-Time Work Rules

SH scholars are permitted to work part-time under these conditions:

Allowed

  • • Up to 30 hours/week during semester
  • • Full-time during official holiday periods
  • • University research/teaching assistant positions
  • • No work permit needed (residence permit covers it)

Not Allowed

  • • Exceeding 30 hours/week during semester
  • • Work that conflicts with class attendance
  • • Self-employment (complicated legal status)
  • • Using work as excuse for poor academic performance

Scholarship Termination Risks

Your scholarship can be terminated for any of these reasons:

  • Failing to meet the 18 credits/semester average (after warning)
  • Absence exceeding 30 consecutive days without approval
  • Disciplinary action by the university
  • Providing false information in your application
  • Not completing the mandatory Hungarian language course (leads to stipend reduction first)
  • Criminal conviction in Hungary
  • Dropping out without formal notification
