University Placement
Where Will MEXT Send You?

For Embassy track scholars, MEXT decides where you study. You list preferences, but the final decision is theirs. Here is how the process actually works, and how to maximise your chances of landing where you want.

University Placement

Embassy track: you list 3 preferences, MEXT decides. They prioritise national over private universities. "Any objections will not be accepted." University track: you already know your university.

Placement Process

1

You list 3 universities

On the Placement Preference Form. Choose strategically.

2

MEXT contacts them

One at a time. National universities are contacted first, regardless of your ranking.

3

University accepts or declines

If first declines, second is tried. This takes months.

4

Final placement

May be placed at alternative university. In rare cases, scholarship cancelled.

Placement Strategy

MEXT prioritises national universities. Having one on your list increases acceptance probability.

Name specific professors on the form. A professor who recognises your name may advocate for your placement.

Less competitive than Tokyo/Kyoto. Lower cost of living. Often equally strong research in niche fields.

Want to Choose Your University?

The University Recommendation track lets you apply directly to the university you want. No placement lottery, no surprises. But you need a professor's support first.
