Japanese Language
What's Required & What Helps

The single most confusing aspect of the MEXT application. Japanese isn't required for most categories — but leaving the exam blank can get you rejected. Here's the full picture, finally explained clearly.

Japanese Language & MEXT

Japanese proficiency is NOT required for most MEXT categories. But it dramatically affects your experience. Here is how the language requirement actually works.

What Level Do You Need?

Select your current Japanese level.

You can still apply!

Most MEXT programmes do not require Japanese. You will get 6–12 months of intensive Japanese training in Japan before your degree starts. On the Embassy exam: attempt the Japanese section anyway — even guessing prevents disqualification.

Good starting point

N5–N4 won't skip the prep year, but shows effort on the exam. Helps significantly with daily life in Japan. Keep studying during application.

Strong advantage

N3 shows serious commitment. Won't skip the prep year but may shorten it. Significantly improves interview performance and daily life.

Skip the prep year!

JLPT N2 or higher lets you bypass the entire Japanese language preparatory period and enter your degree programme directly. This saves 6–12 months. Major advantage.

Preparatory Year Timeline

1

Apr–Sep

Intensive Japanese (5 hours/day). Basics to conversational. Kanji, grammar, speaking.

2

Oct–Mar

Advanced Japanese + academic prep. Technical vocabulary. University-level reading.

3

Apr (Year 2)

Enter degree programme. Most reach N3–N2 by this point.
