SINGA FAQ: Answers A*STAR Has Already Published

These answers come from the 2023 SINGA brochure, the current applicant-portal FAQ and live A*STAR scholarship pages. If A*STAR updates the wording, A*STAR wins.

About the award

Yes, in the official record. A*STAR Research describes SINGA as the international graduate award that brings overseas talent to Singapore for a full PhD. The live scholarships site still publishes AGS with different eligibility (a Singapore AU degree for internationals) and a service commitment for some foreigners. The applicant-portal FAQ uses a separate SINGA enquiry address: singa_enquiries@hq.a-star.edu.sg.

The 2023 brochure FAQ says you are neither required to take up citizenship nor work in Singapore after graduation, and adds that there are career opportunities if you want to stay. Recheck the live wording. That sentence is not AGS.

The 2023 brochure says Singapore institutions admit students with a Bachelor's for graduate work leading to a PhD. Students start with coursework and research, then a thesis after the Qualifying Examination. SINGA awardees normally finish in four years. Current BSc/MSc students can apply.

The brochure lists academic record, publications, recommendations from academic referees, personal achievements, passion and ability to excel in research, and an interview if shortlisted. The criteria are not exhaustive.

Usually yes, says the brochure, plus a research thesis, with extra school or department rules possible. The conferring university sets graduation requirements.

Applying and dates

The brochure says about 12 weeks at the earliest after the closing date. Only shortlisted applicants are notified by email. 2027 close dates are still TBC on a live official page.

The brochure says applicants who apply through the SINGA portal are not required to apply on the university portal unless the university contacts them. That is SINGA. AGS is different: AGS says you must apply separately to the partner university.

Start on the current official A*STAR scholarships website. The current applicant system is sms-applicant-app.a-star.edu.sg. Do not use an abandoned older URL from a blog. Portal FAQ: PDF.

TBC. As of 6 October 2026 no live official page prints 1 December 2026, so this guide will not present it as fact. A 2023 brochure used 1 June (January intake, A*STAR and NTU only) and 1 December (August intake). Confirm on A*STAR.

Money and contacts

Official materials name tuition plus a monthly stipend (and, in the 2023 brochure, a one-time airfare grant and settling-in allowance). This guide does not quote third-party Singapore-dollar figures. Confirm current amounts on A*STAR.
