Feb–Mar 2026

Find Your Fulbright Commission

49 countries have binational commissions. Others use U.S. Embassy contacts. Your commission sets local deadlines, available grant types, and country-specific requirements. Visit the official Fulbright website country directory or search "Fulbright [your country]."

Critical

Check Country-Specific Deadlines

Most fall between September–October, but some countries close as early as May. Track both the local deadline and the IIE portal deadline. Missing either is fatal — no extensions. See our Deadline page.

Mar–Apr 2026

Choose Your Grant Type

Study Awards (Master's/PhD), Research Grants (non-degree), or Visiting Scholar. Not all types available in every country. Check your commission's website.

Apr–May 2026

Register on the Application Portal

Register early to familiarize yourself with the interface and character limits. The portal saves progress. Always preview the PDF output before submitting — formatting issues are common.

Most Important

Write the Statement of Grant Purpose

~800 words answering: What will you do? Why the U.S.? How will it benefit your home country? Expect 10–12 drafts. No contact info in essays. See our Grant Statement Guide.

May–Jul 2026

Write the Personal Statement

About you — your background, motivations, and "ambassador potential." Some cycles replace this with short-answer questions. Check your specific cycle's format.

Start Early

Secure an Affiliation Letter

Expect 10–20% email response rate. Send 15–30 emails. Must be on official letterhead, signed, English only. See our Affiliation Letter Guide.

Jun–Aug 2026

Get Recommendation Letters

Three letters needed. Give recommenders 6–8 weeks. Provide your SGP and CV. Late letters = incomplete application. See our References Guide.

Jul–Sep 2026

Prepare Supporting Documents

Transcripts, diplomas, TOEFL/IELTS, GRE (some countries), CV (max 2 pages), passport copy. See our Documents Guide.

Sep–Oct 2026

Submit and Wait

Preview PDF, confirm all letters uploaded, submit 3+ days early. Then: local review, interview, nomination to IIE, final board approval. Total wait: 4–8 months with no status updates.
