DAAD Research Proposal Guide
Proposal Structure (5-10 pages)
Click each section to see what evaluators expect.
Title and Abstract
Clear, specific title. Abstract in 150-200 words summarizing your entire proposal. This is the first thing evaluators read, so make it count.
Literature Review / Background
Show you know the field. Cite key works, identify the gap your research will fill. Do not just summarize. Show how existing work leads logically to your question.
Research Question
State it clearly and precisely. Good: a specific, testable question. Bad: something vague like exploring the relationship between X and Y. Include sub-questions if helpful.
Methodology
How will you answer your question? Be specific about methods, data sources, analysis techniques. Show feasibility. If you need special equipment or access, explain how you will get it.
Timeline
Break your research into phases with realistic dates. Show you can complete the work within the funding period. Include milestones and deliverables.
Significance
Why does this research matter? What will it contribute to the field? How is it relevant to your home country? DAAD wants research with real-world impact.
References
Use a consistent citation style (APA, Harvard, etc.). Include 15-30 key references. Make sure every citation in the text appears in the reference list and vice versa.
