During Your DAAD Scholarship

Winning the award is only the start. Here's what DAAD expects from you as a scholar — from the first-year progress check and periods abroad to funding length and the alumni network.

Your obligations as a DAAD scholar

DAAD funds you on a few clear conditions. Here's what it expects from you while the scholarship runs.

Progress reports

After your first year of study, DAAD assesses your academic achievements. If they show you will finish within a reasonable time, the scholarship continues as planned. Submit any reports your award letter asks for on time.

Periods abroad (the 25% rule)

If your degree includes a study period or work placement outside Germany, DAAD usually funds it only if it is essential, not in your home country, and no longer than 25% of the scholarship period. For joint and double-degree programs, the limit is up to 50% if the study regulations say so.

Watch out

Longer periods abroad cannot be funded, not even partly. For private trips, follow the rules in your award letter.

Academic focus

Your primary obligation is completing your degree on time. Any part-time job or internship needs DAAD’s approval and your supervisor’s consent. Earnings above EUR 603 gross a month are deducted from your stipend.

No program switching

Your award is only valid for the host university named in your application. Ask DAAD before making any change.

Risk

Changes without DAAD’s approval put your scholarship at risk.

Funding length and extensions

Master’s funding covers the standard period of study of your programme, up to 24 months. Don’t count on an extension. If you think you need more time, talk to DAAD well before your funding runs out.

DAAD alumni network

Join the DAAD alumni network before your scholarship ends. It connects you with former scholars worldwide; DAAD has funded around 3 million people since 1925 — great for career networking and staying connected to Germany.
