After Selection – What Happens Next

Post-selection timeline
From accepting the award to arriving in Germany, there are seven things to get done. Here's the order and the usual timing for the 2027/28 intake (months refer to 2027). Selection runs from February to May depending on your country, so your dates may shift; each step is explained in detail below.

1. Accept your award
Mar–Apr
Sign and return the scholarship acceptance letter by the deadline stated. Read every condition carefully. Note the start date, reporting requirements, and any restrictions on travel or employment.
2. Confirm university admission
Apr–May
If you only had conditional admission, now you need the final letter. Send any remaining documents the university needs.
Your DAAD funding cannot start without confirmed enrollment.
3. Apply for a German student visa

Book a visa appointment at the German embassy immediately — processing often takes 6–12 weeks, and longer at busy missions. You need your DAAD award letter, admission letter, passport, and insurance proof. See our Visa Guide for the full checklist.
4. German language course
Jun–Sep
If DAAD awards you a pre-study German course, it lasts 2, 4 or 6 months and ends before your degree starts, so your scholarship begins earlier. It is compulsory if your program is taught in German. Even if your program is in English, it helps enormously.
5. Find housing
Jul–Sep
Apply for a student dormitory (Studentenwerk) as early as possible — waiting lists are long. Check your university's international office for housing support. Budget roughly EUR 300–500/month for a dorm room, more in big cities. If you live alone in an expensive city, you can apply for DAAD’s rent subsidy (up to EUR 350 a month).
6. Open a German bank account

DAAD deposits your stipend into a German bank account. Open one as soon as you arrive, or use an online bank like N26 that lets you open from abroad. You need your passport and enrollment certificate.
7. Arrive & enroll
Oct 1
Register at the Bürgeramt (residents' office) within 14 days of arrival. Complete university enrollment, then get your student ID and semester ticket. Your first stipend payment arrives shortly after.
