DAAD Benefits 2026 – What You Get
Monthly Stipend
Select your academic level to see your package. All amounts are tax-free.
Good news: PhD rate jumps to EUR 1,400 from February 2026.
Additional Benefits
Beyond the monthly stipend, DAAD covers a lot more.
Lump sum at start and end of scholarship for getting to and from Germany. Amount varies by origin country.
Fully covered for entire scholarship. Health insurance is mandatory in Germany and can cost EUR 80-200/month privately. DAAD handles everything through a group plan.
EUR 460 per year for textbooks, printing, conference fees, and research materials. German university libraries are excellent, so this is mostly extra.
Funded 2-6 month German course at Goethe-Institut or similar. Online options available too. TestDaF and DSH exam fees reimbursed.
Family allowance for spouse/kids if they join you. Rent subsidy if housing costs are high relative to your stipend. Both require separate application.
What DAAD Does NOT Cover
DAAD does not pay tuition fees separately. But this barely matters: most German public universities charge zero tuition for everyone. Exception: Baden-Wurttemberg charges non-EU students EUR 1,500/semester. You will pay the Semesterbeitrag (EUR 100-350/semester) which covers admin and usually a transit pass.
