How to Apply for CGRS-D in 2026

Pick the agency, pick the channel, then use that portal only. Referees submit online. Late files are not accepted, and after you submit only contact details can change.

Three portals, one rule

Apply to the agency best aligned with the research so experts closest to the field review it. You are responsible for that choice. After consulting the subject-matter pages, contact the agencies if you are still unsure.

CIHR

NSERC

Six steps in order

Pick the agency, pick the channel, then use that portal only. Campus deadlines are often much earlier than the agency close (Monday 19 October 2026, 8:00 p.m. ET for direct files this year).

Select the agency
Use Selecting the appropriate federal granting agency.

Confirm the channel
Institution quota or direct to the agency, on the nomination page. Wrong channel means a rejected file.

Get the internal deadline
From graduate studies, if you apply through a campus.

Open the correct portal
ResearchNet, the NSERC online system, or the SSHRC login. Submission is electronic only — not email, not paper.

Invite referees early
Referees submit online. Set their deadline before yours.
Submit a complete file
Portals slow down near the close. Late files are not accepted.

What happens after you click submit

With the exception of personal contact information, you cannot change a submitted application before or after the deadline. Update contact details by emailing the relevant agency. If you apply through an institution, graduate studies run an institutional evaluation and then forward files up to that campus’s quota. Agency committees then score research potential (50%) and relevant experience and achievements (50%).

You will be notified of results by 30 April (30 April 2027 for this competition). If you accept, the agency may publish your name and basic award information.
