The agency rule is 17 October, 8:00 p.m. ET, rolling to the next business day on weekends. In 2026 that means Monday 19 October 2026 for direct files. Campus dates are often much earlier.

The agency rule is 17 October at 8:00 p.m. ET; if that falls on a weekend or holiday, the next business day. 17 October 2026 is a Saturday, so direct applications in the October 2026 competition close on Monday 19 October 2026, 8:00 p.m. ET. Campus dates are often much earlier.

What this page will not invent

Institutional dates are local. Toronto, Alberta, McMaster and others publish their own September or early-October cuts; those are campus rules, not a national second deadline. CIHR’s application instructions give the direct deadline as 19 October but still carry an “October 19, 2027” example in one paragraph — for the competition now open, treat the direct date as 19 October 2026 unless CIHR’s live competition page says otherwise. Recheck the portal you will click.
