Supplements that are not the core stipend

The Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative may offer meritorious Indigenous students (First Nations, Inuit and Métis whose nations or communities are in Canada) who applied through NSERC or SSHRC an Indigenous Scholars Supplement of $5,000 for one year, to the limit of available funding. CIHR uses an agency-specific mechanism instead. The Tri-agency Policy on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation applies.

Each agency has up to 10 additional CGRS-D awards reserved for Black student researchers who self-identify and consent. Budget 2024 also funds extra offers aligned with listed priority research areas (advanced digital technologies, health/biotechnology, clean technology, climate and the Arctic, food and water security, democratic resilience, manufacturing, defence and dual-use). Alignment is identified in the application; it is not a second cash number on the overview page.

This handbook does not invent monthly living-cost tables, tuition waivers, or travel amounts beyond what those official pages state. If a blog lists a different doctoral stipend, ignore it.
