Interview questions by category

Questions fall into five groups. For each one, here is what the interviewer is really testing.

Motivation

• "Why did you choose this specific programme?" Name courses, professors and research labs. Show you've done your homework.
• "Why not study in your home country?" Focus on what France offers uniquely — its research approach, specific expertise.
• "How does this fit your career goals?" Connect past experience → study in France → future contribution.

Academic

• "Tell me about your academic background." A 2-minute summary that highlights relevant coursework and projects.
• "What was your thesis/research about?" Be able to explain it in simple terms and connect it to your French programme.

Why France

• "Do you speak French?" Be honest. Even a few phrases help; show willingness to learn.
• "Have you been to France before?" If not, explain how you've prepared — language courses, research about daily life.

Practical

• "How will you finance your studies?" Detail your scholarship, savings and family support. Show you've planned realistically.
• "Where will you live?" Show awareness of housing challenges and mention CROUS, Visale and your strategy.

Future plans

• "What will you do after graduating?" Have a clear answer. Returning home to contribute is valued; vague answers are red flags.
• "Will you stay in France?" Be strategic. Wanting to stay isn't wrong, but frame it around links between France and your home country.

• Be vague about your programme choice
• Criticise your home country
• Memorise answers word for word
