References
for Dutch Universities

Not every Dutch programme requires references. But when they do, knowing who to ask, what they should write, and how the submission works makes the difference between a formality and a strength.

Do I Need References?

Select your programme type to find out.

Likely YESResearch master’s commonly require 1–2 academic references.
Usually NOMost taught master’s admit on documents alone. “Optional” means strongly recommended.
SometimesUsed as a tiebreaker in competitive selection.
RarelyHBO uses document-based admission.
Check your universitySome require references for NL Scholarship even if the programme does not.
Almost neverStandard bachelor’s admit all qualified applicants without references.

Strong vs Weak References

This works

“She wrote the strongest thesis I supervised in 2024, on stormwater modelling in coastal regions. Her analytical skills and independent problem-solving place her in the top 10% of students I have taught in the last five years.”

Specific project, comparative ranking, concrete qualities.

This fails

“She was in my class of 200 students and received an A. She is an excellent student and I recommend her for your programme.”

No specifics. Could describe any student. No comparative context.

Common Reference Questions

Reach out anyway. Send a professional email reintroducing yourself with your thesis topic and attach your CV.

Dutch universities may accept letters in Dutch, German, or French. Otherwise, have it translated. Content matters more than prose.

Send one urgent, polite message. Contact admissions. Many universities allow a short grace period for references.

Common in some cultures. Write honestly in third person with real examples. The referee reviews, edits, and signs.

Only if you have been out of academia for years and guidelines allow it. If it says “academic,” it means academic.

References Sorted?

With your referees confirmed and briefed, the rest of your application is in your hands. Make sure every other document is equally strong.
