What Dutch Universities Actually Expect
Dutch motivation letters are not personal essays. Admissions committees are pragmatic — they want structured clarity proving you researched their programme, have the background to succeed, and chose this specific university for concrete reasons.
Key distinction: A motivation letter focuses on why you want this programme. A personal statement (UK) focuses on who you are. The subject is the programme, not you.
Opening Examples: Strong vs Weak
"I recently completed my BSc in Environmental Engineering at Istanbul Technical University, where my thesis on urban stormwater management in coastal cities exposed me to the limitations of conventional drainage design. The MSc in Water Technology at Wageningen, particularly its Environmental Systems Analysis track, directly addresses the knowledge gap I identified during my research."
Specific degree, specific university, specific thesis topic, specific programme feature.
"Since childhood, I have always been fascinated by the environment and dreamed of studying at a world-class European university. I believe that your esteemed institution would provide me with a life-changing opportunity to pursue my passion for sustainability."
No specifics. Could be sent to any university in any country. Emotional, not evidence-based.
Word Count Guide
Dutch culture values conciseness. If they say one page, they mean one page. Exceeding the limit signals you cannot follow instructions.
The Five-Part Structure That Works
State your degree, institution, and field. Factual orientation — no quotes, rhetorical questions, or childhood stories.
Connect academic background to field interest. Be specific: courses, thesis work, research projects that led you here.
The most important section. Name specific courses, research groups, professors, or programme features. Generic praise fails here.
Country's strength in your field, English-taught programmes, research infrastructure. No tulips or windmills.
Concrete post-graduation plans connecting the programme to a professional direction. Specific and realistic.
The Mistakes That Get You Rejected
These patterns are flagged as immediate rejection reasons by Dutch admissions readers. Click each to learn more.
No specific course names, no faculty mentions, no programme-unique details. Admissions readers instantly recognize copy-paste letters — they spend less than 30 seconds on them before moving on.
"I have always dreamed of studying abroad" is a feeling, not an argument. Dutch admissions is evidence-based. Show what you have done, what you know about their programme, and what you plan to do with the degree.
Your CV is a separate document. Select 2–3 most relevant experiences and explain how they connect to the programme. Quality over quantity.
"TU Delft is world-renowned" is not a reason. Name the specialization track, the research lab, the teaching methodology. If you cannot do that, you have not done enough research.
In the Netherlands, writing more shows you cannot follow instructions. Conciseness in a limited space is itself a skill they evaluate.
Admissions committees in 2026 know AI text when they see it — formulaic structure, overly smooth transitions, no personal specificity. AI text lacks the concrete details only you can provide. Use AI to brainstorm, but write it yourself.
Before & After: See the Difference
"Your university is one of the best in Europe for my field. I believe studying there will help me achieve my career goals and develop both personally and professionally. The international environment is very appealing to me as I want to broaden my horizons."
"The MSc in Environmental Sciences at Wageningen offers a specialization in Environmental Systems Analysis that directly extends my bachelor thesis work on stormwater modelling. Professor van der Hoek's research on nature-based flood solutions aligns with the infrastructure challenges I documented in coastal Bangladesh, and the 12-week thesis placement programme gives me access to research I cannot find at any other European institution."

How Dutch Letters Differ by Country
NL Scholarship Applications
Some universities use the same motivation letter for the NL Scholarship. Others require a separate statement addressing: why you deserve financial support, what you will contribute, and how you will cover remaining costs.
Key rule: If applying to multiple Dutch universities, section 3 (why THIS programme) must be entirely rewritten for each. The rest can stay similar. This section is what admissions staff read most carefully.
