How to Apply for
Study in Holland

Click through each step, track your documents, and follow the timeline. No central portal — you apply through your chosen university.

The 6-Step Application Process

Click each step to see what to do. There is no central portal — you apply through your chosen university.

1. Select Your Programme

Use the StudyFinder tool to search 2,100+ English-taught programmes. Filter by level, field, and institution.

Tip: Don't choose a programme solely for its scholarship. A good programme without funding serves you better long-term than a mediocre one with EUR 5,000.

2. Find Available Scholarships

Check each university's scholarship page, studyinnl.org/finances, and faculty-specific pages. University scholarships (Amsterdam Excellence EUR 25,000, Utrecht Excellence full tuition + living) are often worth 5-10x the NL Scholarship.

Pro tip: Email the international office and ask what scholarships are available for your specific programme and nationality. They often know about grants that are not prominently advertised.

3. Review Requirements Carefully

Each scholarship has specific requirements beyond basic eligibility. Some want minimum GPA 7.5/10, specific motivation letter formats, research proposals, or video essays.

Make a spreadsheet. For each university: programme name, admission deadline, scholarship deadline, required documents, and formatting requirements.

4. Note All Deadlines (Critical Step)

The scholarship deadline is frequently earlier than the programme admission deadline. You might have until April for admission but only until February 1 for the scholarship.

For non-EU students: Factor in 2-4 months for visa processing. You need admission confirmed by April/May for a September start. See our Deadline guide.

5. Begin Your Admission Application

Register on Studielink (max 4 programmes), then upload documents through each university's portal: transcripts, language scores, passport, CV, and motivation letter.

Start gathering documents early. Official transcripts, translations, apostilles, and IELTS score reports each take 2-3 weeks. Begin 3-4 months before the earliest deadline.

6. Submit Your Scholarship Application

At some universities this is a separate form; at others, a checkbox on your admission application. Always confirm which model your university uses. Typical documents: motivation letter (500-1,000 words), academic transcripts, CV, language proof.

After submission: Selection happens March-May. If selected, the EUR 5,000 is usually deducted from your tuition invoice. If not, you can still pursue your studies at full tuition.

Two Application Paths

University Direct Application

1Create account on university's application portal
2Upload all required documents (transcripts, CV, motivation letter)
3Apply for scholarship within the same portal (or check the box)
4Also register on Studielink for official enrollment

Both university portal AND Studielink registration are required at most institutions.

Studielink (Central System)

1Create a Studielink account at studielink.nl
2Select up to 4 programmes (this is the legal maximum)
3Complete official enrollment registration
4Upload documents via each university's own portal (linked from Studielink)

Studielink is for official enrollment. Documents and scholarship applications go through the university portal.
