Key Information

IELTS requirements vary wildly from 6.0 to 8.0. British Council co-owns IELTS (conflict of interest). 200+ per attempt. Tips and alternatives.

British Council co-owns IELTS alongside IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment. They also promote UK study and require IELTS for scholarships. This is a genuine conflict of interest that's rarely discussed. They profit from the very test they require you to take. At £200+ per attempt, IELTS is a major revenue source for British Council.

Some programmes accept 6.0 overall. Others demand 7.5 or even 8.0 for specific bands. Common requirements: Russell Group Master's typically want 6.5-7.0 overall with no band below 6.0. PhD programmes may ask for 7.0+. Medical programmes often need 7.0 overall with 7.0 in every band. Always check your specific programme's requirements — the university-wide minimum is often lower than the department's.

Many UK universities now accept: PTE Academic (Pearson), TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, Duolingo English Test (increasingly accepted, ~$60 vs £200+ for IELTS). For visa purposes, UKVI only accepts specific "IELTS for UKVI" or approved alternatives. Check both your university's AND the visa requirements separately.

Writing: use the British Council's own free practice tests (ironic, yes). Speaking: don't memorize answers — examiners spot this instantly. Reading: practice skimming, not reading every word. Listening: practice with British accents specifically. Budget for 2-3 attempts. Most people don't hit their target on the first try. The £200+ per attempt adds up quickly, which is exactly how British Council wants it.
