First Things First: British Council Is Not a Scholarship Funder

This confuses almost everyone. The British Council is a cultural relations organisation — think of it as the UK's equivalent of Germany's DAAD or France's Campus France. It promotes UK education and connects you to scholarship opportunities, but in most cases it doesn't write the cheque.

The main exception is GREAT Scholarships, which the British Council co-funds with UK universities. But even there, you apply through the university — not through the British Council. This guide cuts through the confusion, one scholarship at a time.

Six routes cover most funded UK master's study. Here is what each one really offers for the 2027/28 academic year.

GREAT Scholarships

Co-funded by the British Council (through the UK government's GREAT campaign) and UK universities, this is the flagship British Council programme. Each award is worth £10,000 towards tuition for a one-year taught master's. In 2026/27 there were over 140 awards at more than 60 universities for students from 18 countries. The 2027/28 country and university list has not been published on Study UK yet. But here's what the marketing won't tell you: £10,000 covers roughly 25–30% of one year's costs at most universities. Chevening Scholarships

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Chevening is the UK's most prestigious scholarship: fully funded tuition, living costs, flights and visa. But it is brutally competitive (around 1,500 awards a year, a 2–3% acceptance rate). You need at least 2,800 hours (about two years) of work experience and must return home for two years afterwards. The British Council is not involved in the application — you apply at chevening.org. Commonwealth Scholarships

Funded by the UK government and run by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), these are development-focused, fully funded Master's and PhD awards (around 800 a year across all programmes). For 2027/28, Master's Scholarships are open to citizens of 43 eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries, and you typically need a nominating body in your home country. Women in STEM Scholarships

This is the hidden gem: the British Council's only genuinely fully funded programme, worth about £40,000 per scholar — tuition, a living stipend, flights, visa and the health surcharge. It is only for women from selected countries studying STEM subjects who can show financial need, and single, widowed or divorced mothers who bring their children get an additional child allowance. Marshall Scholarships

Marshall Scholarships are for American students only: up to 50 awards a year for postgraduate study at any UK university, funded by the UK government. Extremely competitive — you need a minimum GPA of 3.7 and a strong leadership record. Not connected to the British Council at all. The 2027 round closed on 29 September 2026.

A GREAT Scholarship gives you £10,000. Here's what a year in the UK actually costs:

The visa line is the £558 Student visa fee plus one year of the £776 Immigration Health Surcharge. A 12-month course usually gets a visa of about 16 months, which adds another £388 of surcharge. Add it all up and your out-of-pocket cost is £21,000–57,000, even with a GREAT Scholarship — money that has to come from savings, family or other funding. That's the reality.

Things Nobody Tells You About UK Study

"GREAT Scholarships are fully funded" — they're not

£10,000 is generous, but it covers maybe a quarter of your total costs. Many students accept thinking it's a full ride, then scramble for the remaining £30,000+. If you see a blog claiming a "fully funded British Council scholarship", it is either wrong or confusing GREAT with Chevening, Commonwealth or Women in STEM.

The health surcharge jumped 66% overnight

In February 2024 the Immigration Health Surcharge went from £470 to £776 per year for students. You pay upfront for your entire visa, which runs a few months past your course: for a two-year master's that's usually £1,940 for a health service you might never need. More details.

UK international tuition fees have no cap

Home undergraduates in England pay at most £9,790 a year in 2026/27 (capped by law). International students? There's no cap at all, so universities charge what they want. UCL charges £35,000+ for many master's programmes, Imperial can go well above £40,000, and fees typically rise 3–5% a year. See the full breakdown.

The Graduate Route is being cut

The two-year post-study work visa (Graduate Route) drops to 18 months for anyone who applies on or after 1 January 2027 — which includes everyone finishing a 2027/28 master's. And even with the full two years, only a small percentage of international graduates convert to long-term UK employment. Plan for the likely case that you return home, and treat a UK job as a bonus. Housing scams target international students

The UK has a genuine housing crisis. International students are prime targets for deposit scams — fake landlords, non-existent properties — and for overpriced purpose-built student accommodation. Damp and mould are common in older UK housing, so inspect any room before you pay. Protect yourself.
