How to apply for an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master starting in September 2027: the seven steps every applicant goes through, from shortlisting in the catalogue to waiting for results. There is no single portal — each programme runs its own.

Application Step by Step

There is no single portal — each programme has its own system, its own document list and its own deadline. The process itself, though, follows the same seven steps everywhere.

Jun–Sep 2026 (6+ months before deadline)
Research and shortlist programmes
Browse the Erasmus Mundus Catalogue and filter by subject, country and duration. Shortlist around 3 programmes — there is no official cap on applications any more, but three well-tailored applications beat ten rushed ones. Research each consortium's mobility track, partner universities and alumni experiences.

Check each programme's requirements
Visit each programme's own website. Note the motivation letter word count, required documents, specific language tests, CV format and portfolio needs — these differ for every programme. Key tip: create a spreadsheet tracking each programme's unique requirements.

Prepare your documents
Transcripts, degree certificates, language test scores (still valid!), CV and passport copy. Get translations if needed; some programmes require certified copies. See the full document checklist.

Write your motivation letter(s)
One for each programme — tailored, specific and personal. This is the most important document, so budget 2–4 weeks minimum. Read the Motivation Letter guide.

Secure reference letters
Ask 2–3 professors or supervisors who know you well. Give them 4–6 weeks, brief them on the programme and share your CV. See the References guide.

Oct 2026 – Jan 2027
Register and submit
Register on each programme's portal and upload everything. Double-check formats, sizes and file names. Submit 48+ hours before the deadline — servers crash on the last day every year.
Feb–May 2027
Wait for results
Main list results arrive February–May. A reserve list can run until the summer, sometimes September. Programmes rarely give status updates, so be prepared for months of waiting. Next: the After Selection guide.

Timing for the 2027 intake

For a September 2027 start, applications open in autumn 2026. The official catalogue says most programmes take applications between October and January; each programme sets its own exact date, and self-funded deadlines may be later. The 37 new Joint Masters selected on 16 July 2026 also open for applications this autumn.
