Oxford December vs January Deadlines: Which One Counts for Clarendon
Almost every Oxford graduate course names a December or January deadline as the last point for most University scholarships. Clarendon uses that same pairing. March is a place deadline, not a Clarendon deadline.

Oxford does not run a single university-wide graduate deadline. Each course publishes one or more gathered fields. Official graduate guidance: almost all courses have a December or January deadline, and that date is the latest deadline to be considered for the majority of Oxford scholarships. Clarendon’s own pages use the same pairing: apply by the December or January deadline, whichever is relevant to your course.
That sentence is doing real work. Some courses only gather in December. Some only gather in January. Some list both. A few also list a November field. The relevant date is the one on your course page, not the date your friend’s MSc used. If your course uses December
If the How to Apply section on your course page names a December gathered field as the scholarship / funding deadline, that December date is the Clarendon gate. A later informal reopen is not a second Clarendon round unless Oxford says so.
Do not copy a December date from another course, a blog, or this page. Open the live course page and write the printed date and the 12 noon UK time rule in your own notes.
If your course uses January
If your course page names a January gathered field as the relevant scholarship deadline, January is your Clarendon gate. You did not “miss December” if December was never that course’s funding field.
Confirm the January date on the course page. Completeness still includes references by midday UK time.
Good. Treat that written date as Clarendon. A March or later field is a place deadline, not this scholarship.
How to read the course page

Why Oxford split the year this way
Departments need a gathered field large enough to rank applicants against each other before they nominate for central scholarships. Humanities and some social-science courses have long used an early-winter field. Other departments, including many in the sciences, gather in January after undergraduate results and reference letters have settled. Continuing Education and a minority of professional courses follow their own printed dates.
Clarendon nominations are reviewed at division level in February or March. That is why the funding deadline has to sit in December or January: the file must already be in the department before those meetings. A March application arrives after the shortlist conversation has usually happened.
Practical traps
- Applying to two courses with two different dates. Each application is judged on its own deadline. Hitting January for course A does not rescue a late application to course B if B’s scholarship field was December.
- Time zones. Deadlines are 12 noon UK time. The UK is on GMT from late October until late March, so every December and January deadline is 12:00 GMT. Convert from GMT, not BST.
- References arriving after noon. You can submit the form and still be incomplete. Chase referees two weeks out.
- A course that stays open after the printed deadline. Oxford may keep a course open for places. Open for places is not the same as open for Clarendon. Official Clarendon pages still point at December or January.
