How to Apply for Clarendon 2027–28: There Is No Clarendon Form

Apply to Oxford. Stop looking for a Clarendon form.

The official Clarendon applicants page is unambiguous: by applying for graduate study you are automatically considered for Clarendon. You do not submit additional Clarendon documents. There are no separate scholarship application forms. The only timing rule is that you must apply by the December or January admissions deadline that is relevant to your course.

There is no Clarendon tick box. Applying to Oxford on time is the process.

That is the entire “how to apply.” Everything else is the standard Oxford graduate application, done early enough and completely enough that the department can actually assess you. Incomplete files at the deadline are unlikely to be assessed at that deadline — which means they miss Clarendon even if you later upload the missing transcript.

A working sequence

1. 1
   Identify the course, not the scholarship

   Search the Oxford graduate course list. Read the How to Apply section on that course page. That page, not a scholarship blog, lists the documents, word limits, English-language level, and the December and/or January deadline that will govern Clarendon.

   Treat the funding deadline as a completeness deadline

   Oxford tells applicants to submit at least two weeks before the chosen deadline. References must also arrive. The clock is 12 noon UK time. If your course has both a December and a January date, use the one the course page marks as relevant for your intended start — explained on December vs January.

   Build the academic file Clarendon will actually read

   Transcripts, CV, statement of purpose, written work or research proposal if the course asks for them, and referees who can speak to academic potential. There is no extra Clarendon essay. A weak statement cannot be rescued later by a “scholarship letter” because that letter does not exist. Detail sits on the documents page.

   Submit the graduate application and pay the fee (or claim a waiver)

   For 2027–28 entry Oxford’s Application Guide lists a fee of £75 for taught courses and £20 for research courses such as the DPhil; waivers exist for some applicants, including those resident in low-income countries. Confirm the current fee and waiver rules in the official Application Guide. College preference is part of the Oxford form, not a separate Clarendon step. You may be placed at a college later as partnership awards are matched.

5. Do not wait for a Clarendon acknowledgement

   There is no “your Clarendon application was received” email. Departments assess admission and, in parallel, decide whom to nominate. Divisions review nominations in February or March. Most initial Clarendon offer letters (CB1s) go out by the end of April. Unsuccessful applicants are not contacted. Official guidance: if you have not heard by mid-June, assume you were not awarded.

What you should not do

• Do not email the Clarendon Fund asking for a form. Official pages repeat that none exists.
• Do not treat a March deadline as a funding deadline. Oxford says applications for a March or later deadline are ineligible for Oxford scholarships. December or January is the last Clarendon gate.
• Do not confuse Clarendon with Weidenfeld-Hoffmann. Weidenfeld requires a tick in the University of Oxford Scholarships section and a completed Weidenfeld statement uploaded with the graduate application.
• Do not apply to Rhodes through the Oxford form. Rhodes is a separate constituency competition. Winning Rhodes and being considered for Clarendon are different machines.
