There is no Clarendon closing date. There is your course’s.
Every year blogs invent a single “Clarendon deadline 2027” and paste a calendar date that belonged to one department last cycle. That is how people miss the award. Oxford’s rule is: you will be automatically considered if you apply by the December or January deadline, whichever is relevant to your course. Deadline information lives on the graduate course pages.
This handbook will not invent a 2 December or 8 January figure for 2027 entry. As of 21 September 2026, the 2027–28 graduate admissions cycle is the live cycle (Oxford confirmed it opens in September 2026). Open your course page and read the date printed there. If two dates appear, read the surrounding sentence that tells you which one is the scholarship / gathered-field deadline.
The clock is 12 noon UK time
Oxford’s graduate FAQ states that application deadlines fall at 12 noon UK time (midday). Applications missing required materials will not normally be assessed. Documents submitted after the deadline may not be taken into account. If you are in Lagos, Delhi, or Los Angeles, midday in Oxford is not midnight on your phone.
The University asks you to submit at least a week before the deadline — two weeks if you can — because staff cannot guarantee help in the final days. References are part of completeness. A submitted form with two of three references still missing is not a complete application.
How to find the date that actually counts
- 1. Open the course page from the graduate admissions catalogue. Do not rely on a department tweet screenshot from last November.
- 2. Read “How to apply” and the deadline table. Almost all courses have a December or January deadline. That is the latest deadline to be considered for the majority of Oxford scholarships, including Clarendon.
- 3. If a November deadline exists, Oxford says applications submitted by that date are also considered for Oxford scholarships and are more likely to receive an earlier decision. Using November does not hurt Clarendon; it can only help your timeline.
- 4. A later gathered field (often March) may still admit you to the course if places remain. Do not assume it still carries Clarendon. Official Clarendon pages name December or January only.
After you submit: the official scholarship clock
Departments assess the academic file and decide whom to nominate. Academic divisions and Continuing Education meet in February or March to review nominations. Successful applicants receive a scholarship offer letter, referred to internally as a CB1. Most initial offers are sent by the end of April.
Unsuccessful students are not contacted. Official timeline wording: if you have not heard by mid-June, assume you have not been awarded a Clarendon scholarship. From April into the summer, partnership awards are matched and a CB2 funding-breakdown letter follows, with college placement confirmed alongside those awards. More on that sequence: after selection.
