After Selection: Taking Up the Italian Government Scholarship

The letter is not the landing

Selection happens on a country track. In the last call the mission published its merit ranking of winners and reserves on its own website, and only winners were notified through Study in Italy. If your name or protocol number is not on the list, you were not awarded. The same Italian mission that read your file is usually the office you will return to with a visa file. Do not celebrate by disappearing from the portal: accept whatever the portal and the mission ask you to accept, on their deadline — which this handbook will not invent for 2027–28.

The official award document is the Dichiarazione di assegnazione (awarding letter), issued by the mission. It fixes the number of months, the start and end dates, the programme and the institution, and it cannot be modified — you read it and accept it as issued.

You still need a real seat in Italy. Pre-enrolment and tests remain on Universitaly and with the host. Joint and double degrees still need a valid Italian enrolment certificate. A MAECI yes does not create a matriculation number.

A practical order that does not invent official dates

   Accept on the channel the mission names

   Portal, email, or note verbale — use what they send. If you declared missing papers, upload them only when the portal asks. Keep PDFs: you will show them again at enrolment and at the consulate.

   Lock enrolment and Universitaly

   Finish pre-enrolment, sit outstanding tests, and obtain the Italian enrolment certificate if you are on a joint or double degree. The grant follows a real Italian seat, and it is not paid during preparatory courses.

   Take the visa and tax-code file to the same country track

   Study visas are an immigration process, not a MAECI annex. The last call told winners to apply to the competent Italian mission for the codice fiscale (tax code) and study visa, where required, before the scholarship start date and early enough to arrive in time. Bring the award letter, admission proof, and whatever that consulate's published study-visa list requires.

   Arrive on time: account, entry proof, first instalment

   In 2026–27 the full grant required being in Italy by 15 November 2026. Open the Italian current account, give your IBAN and tax code as the award instructions say, and keep proof of your entry date. Do not expect the first €5,500 (last published first instalment) to land the week you land.

   If your type is renewable, treat next year as a new file

   Master's, AFAM and PhD were renewable in the last call. Research and Italofonia were not. Bachelor Costruiamo il futuro was already a renewal path. A future call will say whether renewals remain and what proof of progress they want (in 2026–27: priority from 15 CFU, and a supervisor letter for PhD). Do not assume a silent rollover.

The money pipe

The last published pattern paid €10,800 in three instalments (€5,500 + €2,300 + €3,000), or €3,600 in one payment for language courses, to an Italian current account in your name. Opening that account is part of taking up the award. Foreign IBANs were not the published pipe.

Instalments are uneven. Rent is monthly. Arrive able to live until the first transfer actually posts. Host international offices often tell you which banks will open an account for a newly arrived student; follow their list rather than a general travel blog. Leaving Italy for more than 15 consecutive days (Christmas break aside) had to be notified and could reduce the grant.

If you are not selected

The country track is competitive and diplomatic, and the ranking cannot be appealed. A rejection is not a comment on every other Italian university scholarship. You can still enrol if the host admits you and you can pay. You can watch the official MAECI page for the next annual cycle — 2027–28 dates included — without inventing them in the meantime.
