Chevening Scholarship Deadline 2027

Last updated: March 19, 2026

Key Dates & Timeline

One hard deadline. No rolling admissions. Miss it and you wait a full year. Note: Chevening has not yet published the official 2027/2028 dates. The dates below are expected based on the recurring annual pattern (applications typically open in early August and close in early November) and are to be confirmed. The countdown targets an estimated early-November 2026 deadline.

The Big Deadline

Application Closes (expected — to be confirmed)

Expected early November 2026

12:00 noon GMT — London time

No extensions. No exceptions. No appeals.

This is the absolute cut-off. In a typical year, the Chevening online application portal shuts down at exactly 12:00 GMT (noon, not midnight) in early November — for the 2027/2028 cycle this is expected in early November 2026 (to be confirmed; official dates not yet announced). After that moment, you cannot submit, edit, or complete your application. It's done.

No extensions. No exceptions. No "I had internet problems" appeals. No "the portal was slow" excuses. The system closes, and that's it. Every year, applicants email Chevening begging for extra time. The answer is always the same: no.

Critical detail: The deadline is 12:00 noon GMT, not midnight. Many applicants assume they have until the end of the day. They don't. If you're in a different time zone, convert carefully. 12:00 GMT = 17:30 IST, 20:00 SGT, 07:00 EST, 04:00 PST. Submit at least 3 to 5 days early to avoid any risk.

Full Timeline for 2027/28

The entire Chevening cycle, from portal opening to arriving in the UK, spans about 13 months. The dates below are expected based on the recurring annual pattern and are to be confirmed — Chevening has not yet published the official 2027/2028 dates. Here's every milestone:

Early Aug 2026 (expected) Applications Open

The online portal opens. You can create your account, start filling in personal details, and begin drafting your four essays. The portal saves your progress, so you can come back and edit as many times as you want before the deadline.

Early Nov 2026 (expected) Application Deadline (to be confirmed)

Portal closes at 12:00 noon GMT. Your application, including all four essays, must be fully submitted. You don't need university offers or references at this stage — just the application form and essays.

Mid Nov 2026 (expected) Reference Deadline

Your two referees have approximately one extra week after the main deadline to submit their references through the portal. They'll receive an automated email with instructions. If they don't submit, your application is incomplete.

Nov – Feb Reading Committee Review

The British Embassy or High Commission in your country reviews applications. Reading committees assess your essays, work experience, leadership potential, and how well your profile matches Chevening's criteria. This is a long, quiet period. You won't hear anything.

Feb – Mar 2027 (expected) Interview Shortlist Notifications

Shortlisted candidates receive an email inviting them to interview. Not everyone who applies gets shortlisted — typically only 2 to 4 times the number of available awards per country. If you don't hear by late March, you're likely not shortlisted.

Mar – Apr 2027 (expected) Interviews

Interviews are conducted at the British Embassy or High Commission in your country. They last around 30 minutes and are conducted by a panel. You'll be asked about your essays, career plans, leadership experience, and why you chose your specific universities and courses.

Jun 2027 (expected) Results Announced

Successful candidates receive a conditional offer. "Conditional" means you still need to meet certain requirements: an unconditional university offer, English language scores, and sometimes other documents. You typically have a few weeks to confirm.

Jul 2027 (expected) University Offer Deadline

You must have an unconditional offer from one of your three chosen universities by this point. If you can't secure one, your Chevening award may be withdrawn. This is why applying to universities early and in parallel with Chevening is critical.

Aug 2027 (expected) Pre-Departure Events

Chevening organises pre-departure briefings in many countries. You'll meet other scholars from your country, get practical advice about living in the UK, and start building your Chevening network before you even leave home.

Sep 2027 (expected) Arrive in the UK

You arrive in the UK, attend Chevening orientation events in London, and begin your Master's programme. Most programmes start in late September or early October.

University Application Deadlines

This is where many Chevening applicants get caught out. University deadlines are completely separate from the Chevening deadline, and some are much earlier than you'd expect.

When you apply to Chevening, you list three university choices. You don't need offers at the time of application. But after you're shortlisted (or selected), you'll need to secure an unconditional offer from at least one of those three universities. If you haven't applied to any of them, or if their deadlines have passed, you're stuck.

University Type Typical Deadline Range Notes
Oxbridge (Oxford, Cambridge) January – March Very early. Some courses close in January.
Russell Group (LSE, UCL, Edinburgh, etc.) January – June Popular courses fill early. Apply by March to be safe.
Other UK universities March – July More flexible, but still don't wait until the last minute.

Strategy: Apply to your three university choices as early as possible — ideally between November and January, right after submitting your Chevening application. Don't wait for Chevening results. If you get a Chevening offer but have no university place, the offer is useless. You must manage both timelines simultaneously.

English Language Test Deadline

You don't need English test scores when you submit your Chevening application. But if you're shortlisted, you'll need to provide them as part of the conditions for your award. The typical deadline for submitting scores is around February to March 2027 (expected — to be confirmed), depending on your country.

Most Chevening scholars submit IELTS Academic scores. The minimum is usually an overall band score of 6.5 with no sub-score below 5.5, though individual university requirements may be higher (many require 7.0 overall).

Book Early

IELTS test slots fill up fast, especially in popular countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Kenya. In peak season (October to January), you might wait 4 to 6 weeks for a slot. Book your test as soon as applications open in August.

Results Take Time

IELTS results take 13 days for paper-based tests and 3 to 5 days for computer-based. If you're taking the test in December or January, factor in the processing time. A retake in February leaves almost no margin for error.

If you already have a valid IELTS or TOEFL score (within two years), you're ahead of the game. If not, treat this as urgent. Failing to submit English scores on time is one of the most common reasons conditional offers get withdrawn.

Reference Deadline

Your two referees get approximately one week after the main application deadline to submit their references. For the 2027/28 cycle, that means the reference deadline is expected around mid-November 2026 (to be confirmed — official dates not yet announced).

Here's how it works: when you submit your application, Chevening automatically sends an email to each of your two referees with a link and instructions. They need to complete an online form with questions about your character, leadership, and potential. It's not a traditional letter — it's a structured questionnaire.

The problem? Many referees don't see the email, ignore it, or forget about it. If both references aren't submitted by the deadline, your application is treated as incomplete. It won't be reviewed. All your essay writing and preparation is wasted.

Don't leave this to chance. Tell your referees well in advance (at least a month before the deadline). Explain exactly what they'll receive and when. Send them a reminder when you submit your application. Then follow up again 3 days before the reference deadline. Some applicants even sit with their referees while they fill it in. Whatever it takes — get those references submitted.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

Nothing happens. And that's the point. There's no extension, no appeal process, no "technical difficulties" exception, and no compassionate consideration. The portal literally shuts down at 12:00 noon GMT on the application deadline day (expected in early November 2026 — to be confirmed), and your access is revoked.

If you were mid-submission when the portal closed, your application won't be processed. If you submitted everything except one essay, it's incomplete and won't be reviewed. If your referees didn't submit on time, same result.

Every year, Chevening receives thousands of emails from applicants who missed the deadline by minutes or hours. The response is always the same: apply again next year.

The lesson is simple: treat the start of November as your personal deadline (the official date is expected in early November 2026, to be confirmed). Give yourself a buffer. The portal has crashed before due to last-minute traffic. Internet outages happen. Computers die. If you finish early, you can always go back and edit your essays before the real deadline. But if you're scrambling at 11:45 GMT on deadline day, you're gambling with an entire year.
