Chevening Scholarship Deadline 2027/28

One hard deadline. No rolling admissions. Miss it and you wait a full year. The official 2027/2028 dates are published on the Chevening application timeline: applications opened on 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC and closed on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. If you are invited to interview and succeed, you must submit at least one unconditional UK university offer by 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027.

The Big Deadline

This is the absolute cut-off. For the 2027/2028 cycle, the official Chevening timeline states that the online application system closes at 11:00 UTC on 6 October 2026. After that moment, you cannot submit, edit or complete your application. It's done.

No extensions. No exceptions. No “I had internet problems” appeals. No “the portal was slow” excuses. The system closes, and that's it. Every year, applicants email Chevening begging for extra time. The answer is always the same: no.

Full Timeline for 2027/28

The entire Chevening cycle, from portal opening to arriving in the UK, spans about 13 months. All stages below come from the official Chevening 2027/2028 timeline; pre-departure events follow the usual annual pattern.

   Applications open

   The online portal opens. You can create your account, start filling in personal details and begin drafting your four essays. The portal saves your progress, so you can come back and edit as many times as you want before the deadline.

   Application deadline

   Portal closes at 11:00 UTC. Your application, including all four essays, must be fully submitted. You don't need university offers at this stage — just the application form and essays.

   From October 2026

   Eligibility sifting

   Chevening checks every submitted application against the eligibility criteria. Applications that don't meet them are rejected before they reach a reading committee.

   Mid-October 2026 – January 2027

   Reading committee review

   Independent reading committees assess every eligible application, looking at your essays, work experience, leadership potential and how well your profile matches Chevening's criteria. This is a long, quiet period. You won't hear anything.

   Interview shortlist notifications

   Shortlisted candidates receive an email inviting them to interview. Not everyone who applies gets shortlisted — Chevening does not publish shortlist sizes, but they are usually a few times the number of awards for your country. If you haven't heard by late February, you're likely not shortlisted.

   March – April 2027

   Interviews

   A competency-based panel interview in English, with representatives from the British Embassy or High Commission in your country; the location and format are confirmed when you book your slot. Expect around 30 minutes of questions about your essays, career plans, leadership experience and why you chose your specific universities and courses. Your two reference letters must be uploaded no later than seven working days before the interview.

   Results announced

   Successful candidates receive a conditional offer. “Conditional” means you still need to meet certain requirements: an unconditional university offer (including meeting that university's English language requirement) and sometimes other documents. You typically have a few weeks to confirm.

   University offer deadline

   If your interview is successful, you must receive and submit at least one unconditional UK university offer by 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027. If you can't secure one, your Chevening award may be withdrawn. This is why applying to universities early and in parallel with Chevening is critical.

   Pre-departure events

   Chevening organises pre-departure briefings in many countries. You'll meet other scholars from your country, get practical advice about living in the UK and start building your Chevening network before you even leave home.

    Arrive in the UK

    You arrive in the UK, attend Chevening orientation events in London and begin your Master's programme. Most programmes start in late September or early October.

University Application Deadlines

This is where many Chevening applicants get caught out. University deadlines are completely separate from the Chevening deadline, and some are much earlier than you'd expect.

When you apply to Chevening, you list three university choices. You don't need offers at the time of application. But after you're shortlisted (or selected), you'll need to secure an unconditional offer from at least one of those three universities. If you haven't applied to any of them, or if their deadlines have passed, you're stuck.

English Language Test Timing

Chevening removed its own English language requirement in 2020, so you don't submit English test scores to Chevening at all. But your universities set their own English requirements, and you'll usually need to meet them to turn a conditional university offer into the unconditional offer due by 8 July 2027. Work back from that date and from each university's own deadline for submitting scores.

Most Chevening scholars take IELTS Academic. Universities commonly ask for an overall band score of 6.5 with no sub-score below 5.5, and many require 7.0 overall.

If you already have a valid IELTS or TOEFL score (within two years), you're ahead of the game. If not, treat this as urgent. Missing a university's English condition is one of the most common reasons scholars fail to secure an unconditional offer in time — and without one, the Chevening award is withdrawn.

Reference Deadline

You name two referees in your application, but the letters themselves come later. According to Chevening's reference guidance, if you're shortlisted you must upload both reference letters to the online application system yourself, no later than seven working days before your interview. Chevening does not contact your referees for you.

Referees should know you in a professional or personal capacity, but can't be a friend or relative. Letters must be in English, or come with a notarised English translation.

The problem? Many referees are busy, forget, or take weeks to write a letter. If both references aren't uploaded on time, you are removed from consideration for the award. All your essay writing and preparation is wasted.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

Nothing happens. And that's the point. There's no extension, no appeal process, no “technical difficulties” exception and no compassionate consideration. The portal shuts down at 11:00 UTC on 6 October 2026, and your access is revoked.

If you were mid-submission when the portal closed, your application won't be processed. If you submitted everything except one essay, it's incomplete and won't be reviewed. If your reference letters aren't uploaded on time later in the process, same result.

Every year, Chevening receives thousands of emails from applicants who missed the deadline by minutes or hours. The response is always the same: apply again next year.

The lesson is simple: treat late September as your personal deadline. Give yourself a buffer before 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. The portal has crashed before due to last-minute traffic. Internet outages happen. Computers die. If you finish early, you can always go back and edit your essays before the real deadline. But if you're scrambling at 10:45 UTC on deadline day, you're gambling with an entire year.
