Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Alternatives: Clarendon, Rhodes, Chevening and How They Fit Together
The WH award funds about 30 people a year, so you need a plan B. The good news: one Oxford application can put you in front of several funders at once.
About 30 scholars a year, drawn from applicants to 40 courses across 188 countries and territories, means most strong applicants will not win. Plan your funding as a portfolio. Some options run off the same Oxford application; others have their own deadlines, and some of those have already passed for 2027–28.

Clarendon: the automatic option
Clarendon guide →Clarendon is Oxford’s flagship merit scholarship, with over 200 new fully funded awards a year. There is no separate form: if you apply by your course’s December or January deadline, you are considered automatically. That is the same deadline as WH, so a WH applicant gets Clarendon consideration for free. Oxford’s course pages say most Oxford scholarships work this way — automatic assessment after a course offer — with a minority, like WH, needing a separate application.
Clarendon is judged mainly on academic merit. WH is judged on impact and leadership as well. A file that is strong on both can be in contention for each, but you will only take up one full award; your offer letters will set out the terms.
Rhodes: mostly closed for 2027
Rhodes guide →The Rhodes Scholarship also funds Oxford fees and a stipend (£21,060 a year in 2026–27), runs for two or three years, and allows DPhils. It is selected by country constituency, with its own application and interviews in autumn. The 2027 constituency deadlines we could confirm ran from 23 July to 7 October 2026 (the US is last). If you missed them, plan for the 2028 round; the 2027 round opened on 1 June 2026 (1 July in the US).
Chevening and the joint award
Chevening guide →Chevening is the UK government’s scholarship for future leaders: one-year master’s at any eligible UK university, for people with at least 2,800 hours of work experience. Its 2027/28 window closed on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC.
There is also a joint Chevening-Weidenfeld-Hoffmann scholarship. Oxford says you apply through Chevening and must list Oxford as your first-choice university; the Trust says you must be selected by both schemes, and that the partnership currently provides three awards a year. Joint scholars follow Chevening’s terms as well as the Trust’s.
Other routes worth checking
From 2026 the Trust partners with the OPP to support Pakistani graduate students. Applying for WH counts as consent to be considered.
Many Oxford colleges and departments run their own scholarships; course pages link to them under “Funding and costs”.
UK government master’s and PhD awards for eligible Commonwealth countries (43 for the Master’s scheme). The CSC deadline for 2027/28 is 20 October 2026, 16:00 BST; national nominators often close earlier.
If Cambridge is an option: full funding, with a US round closing 14 October 2026 and others on 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027.
A sensible strategy
- 1Apply to one eligible course by its December or January deadline
That one submission gives you WH (with the statement) and automatic consideration for most other Oxford scholarships.
- 2Write the WH Statement properly
It is the only extra document, and it is the one most competitors underinvest in.
- 3Check partner and college funding
Read your course page’s funding section and the colleges that accept your course.
- 4Plan next year’s external rounds now
Chevening and most Rhodes rounds have closed for 2027–28. Put the 2028 dates in your calendar if this year does not work out.
