Humboldt Fellowship Eligibility 2027: The Rules That Decide Before Anyone Reads Your Proposal

Any nationality and any field can apply, but several formal rules are checked before peer review: time since your doctorate, the 90-day Germany limit, publications, language and prior Humboldt funding. Use the checker below.

The foundation runs a formal eligibility check on every application before any reviewer sees it. Fail one of these rules and the file is rejected without a word about your science. All rules below come from the official programme page and its FAQ, and the programme information (January 2026).

0 of 7 answered

  1. 1
Will you hold a doctorate (or equivalent) by the selection meeting, completed no more than 4 years (postdoc) or 12 years (experienced) before the foundation receives your application, after any recognised career breaks?
  2. 2
Do you have peer-reviewed publications — and, for the experienced line, papers where you were thematic lead plus a leadership role such as assistant professor or group leader?
  3. 3
Have you spent no more than 90 days in Germany in the 18 months before you submit (entry and exit days count as full days)?
  4. 4
Are you either not a German national/educational resident, or have you lived and worked abroad for more than 10 years (or more than 5 with strong ties)?
  5. 5
Do you have, or can you get, a host at a German research institution who is not your doctoral supervisor, long-term mentor or relative?
  6. 6
Have you never received a Humboldt research fellowship or award before?
  7. 7
Do you have good English or German — and German, with a certificate, if your humanities, social science or clinical project needs it?

You appear to meet the published formal rules. This is a planning tool, not a foundation decision. Formal eligibility is only assessed once your application is received.

At least one formal rule is not met. This is a planning tool, not a foundation decision. Borderline cases (career breaks, physicians, no doctorate customary in your country) can be checked by emailing your CV and publication list to info@avh.de before applying.

Time since your doctorate

Postdocs must have completed the doctorate within the last four years. Experienced researchers within the last twelve years. The date that counts is the final academic step — usually the defence or viva — not the date the certificate was issued. With several doctorates, the first one counts.

The cut-off is measured to the date the foundation receives your application. Because the file only counts as received once your host has uploaded their statement, a slow host can cost you eligibility if you are close to the limit. There is one safety net: if the portal closes on you, your application is treated as received on the closing date, provided you submit within 14 days after the next call opens.

You can apply before your defence if you will finish before the selection meeting and can already provide a written summary of findings. But the foundation warns it will formally reject you if your dissertation is unpublished and you have no other publications.

Career breaks extend the window

Mothers can claim two extra years for each child born after the PhD, plus any further verifiable parenting time. Fathers and other carers are credited with verifiable parenting periods. Military or alternative service, caring for relatives, long-term illness and pandemic lab closures also count. Job hunting, unemployment and non-academic jobs do not. The total extension is capped at six years.

If a doctorate is not customary in your field or country

You may apply to the experienced line up to 16 years after your master’s or equivalent, if your publication record matches that career stage. Physicians need a research doctorate or comparable degree and should read the foundation’s physicians’ questionnaire.

Extra bar for experienced researchers

Four years is not a floor for the experienced line — someone two years out can apply there if they already hold a role such as assistant professor, lecturer or head of an independent group and have papers where they were thematic lead. Equally, being more than four years out does not make you competitive as an “experienced” applicant if you have only held traditional postdoc positions.

The 90-day rule and German applicants

You must not have spent more than 90 days in total in Germany in the 18 months before your application is received, for any reason. Separately, anyone who supported themselves with funding from German institutions, or worked on a doctoral project in Germany, for more than 90 days in that window is ineligible wherever they live.

Germans and “educational residents”

German citizens — and anyone who did school plus a degree, or a degree plus the doctorate, in Germany — can apply only if they have lived and worked abroad for more than 10 years, or more than 5 years with strong ties to their country of residence (a tenured post, its citizenship, or permanent residence). EU free movement does not count as permanent residence. The FAQ adds that they are generally ineligible if they have been in Germany at all in the 18 months before their application is received.

Other formal rules

  • No previous Humboldt sponsorship. If you have already held a Humboldt research fellowship or award, you go to the alumni programmes instead.
  • One Humboldt programme at a time. Parallel applications to other funders are allowed if you declare them.
  • Language. Natural sciences and engineering: good German or English. Humanities, social sciences and medicine: German if the research needs it (certificate required), otherwise English. Native speakers and people who have worked in an English-speaking country do not need a certificate.
  • Brazilian researchers should first look at the CAPES-Humboldt Research Fellowship; if not eligible there, the standard programme is open.
