Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship FAQ 2027: Straight Answers

The questions applicants ask most about the AES and its successor, the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship, answered from UvA’s own faculty pages.

Answers are based on the official Amsterdam Merit Scholarship hub and the faculty pages it links to, checked 6 October 2026. If UvA and this page disagree, UvA wins. For a tick-list, use the checklist.

The scholarship itself

Not under that name. UvA’s master’s scholarships page lists the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) and faculty scholarships; the AES is no longer listed. The AMS serves the same group — outstanding non-EU/EEA master’s applicants — but each faculty runs its own version.

Not as a single figure. Science offers €26,125 for September 2027, Humanities offered €37,500 for 2026–27, Economics and Business pays the tuition fee plus €5,000, Social Sciences pays an amount equal to tuition, and several faculties have not yet published 2027–28 amounts.

Usually it is a grant paid in monthly instalments while you pay full tuition yourself. Science, Social Sciences and Child Development and Education say it cannot be used as a tuition waiver. Only some awards are large enough to help with living costs.

Very few. Science: one for September 2027. Law: one, by lottery. Psychology: two. Communication Science: one or at most two. Social Sciences: two in 2025. Economics and Business: 12 last year. Humanities: four in 2026–27.

English-taught master’s and research master’s under the nine faculty links on the AMS hub, with faculty-specific limits. For example, Law covers four LLMs and Humanities only one-year, non-selective programmes.

Eligibility and applying

Science and Economics and Business say so explicitly. Law asks for a GPA comparable to 4.0 (USA), first-class honours or 8.0 (Dutch scale); Communication Science asks for at least 8 out of 10. In practice, yes.

No. The AMS is for non-EU/EEA nationals who pay the institutional fee. Dual nationals with an EU/EEA passport are excluded.

Mostly no. You tick the scholarship option and upload extra documents in your master’s application. Exceptions: Humanities used a separate LLAMS form, Communication Science has a questionnaire, and Child Development and Education asks for an email.

15 January 2027 for most faculties, 15 February 2027 at 23:59 CET for Social Sciences. Psychology used 1 March in the last cycle. Your full master’s application must be in by the scholarship date.

Law by end of March, Science in April, Economics and Business at the end of April, Social Sciences by mid-May, Child Development and Education before the end of June.

Renewal and alternatives

It depends on the faculty. Science requires at least 40 ECTS in year one. Social Sciences requires satisfactory progress. Economics and Business funds one year without prolongation.

Not with another full-coverage scholarship for the same period. Partial support and personal funds are fine; declare them.

UvA is not listed among participating institutions for 2026–27 on the official Study in NL page. VU Amsterdam is.

You can still take your place as a self-funded student, or look at Leiden’s LExS, TU Delft’s van Effen scholarship (both close 1 December 2026), the NL Scholarship and Erasmus Mundus.
