Amsterdam Merit Scholarship by Faculty: Amounts, Awards and Eligible Programmes

Which UvA master’s programmes can lead to an AMS, how many awards each faculty gives, and what each one actually pays — from €4,000 to €37,500.

The central AMS page links to nine faculty or graduate-school pages. That list is the closest thing to an official “eligible programmes” list: if your programme sits under one of these faculties and is English-taught, an AMS route probably exists. Below is what each page said on 6 October 2026.

“Last cycle” means the page still shows the 2026 intake. Expect the 2027 dates to be similar, but confirm.

Faculty of Science

For the September 2027 start, Science will award only one AMS across all of its MSc programmes, worth €26,125. It is paid in monthly instalments and “cannot be used as a (partial)” tuition waiver: you pay the full fee yourself. Science is also the only faculty that spells out renewal for two-year programmes — at least 40 ECTS in year one. You apply by ticking the AMS box in your MSc application and adding a 500-word motivation letter and CV.

Economics and Business

The Economics and Business scholarships page says applications open at the beginning of October, close on 15 January, and results come at the end of April. The AMS is worth the tuition fee plus a €5,000 allowance for one year, “without prolongation”. Last year the faculty awarded 12. That makes it the most generous faculty by number of winners, which also makes it the most crowded.

Humanities: the Letje Lips AMS

The Graduate School of Humanities runs its version as the Letje Lips Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (LLAMS). For 2026–27 it offered four awards of €37,500, only for one-year, non-selective English-taught master’s. It uses a separate LLAMS form on top of the master’s application. The page notes it is being updated for 2027–28, so treat the amount and dates as last year’s.

Amsterdam Law School

Law gives one AMS a year to students admitted to four LLMs: International and European Law, Transnational and European Private Law, Law & Finance, and International Criminal Law. Eligible candidates enter a lottery. You need a very high GPA (comparable to 4.0 USA, first-class UK, 8.0 Dutch) and a 500-word motivation letter. Law also lists the separate Mr Julia Henriëtte Jaarsma-Adolfs Fund, open to EEA and non-EEA students, with the same 15 January deadline.

Social and Behavioural Sciences

Three separate units sit here. Social Sciences (GSSS) pays an amount equal to the tuition fee in monthly instalments, closes on 15 February 2027 and in 2025 awarded two scholarships — 1.5% of applicants. Psychology gives one award to a Master’s track student and one to a Research Master’s student; you just answer “yes” to the scholarship question. Communication Science gives one or at most two, shortlists the eight strongest candidates and says 2027–28 details will follow in November 2026. Child Development and Education covers its Research Master’s and the Youth at Risk track; you email a motivation letter and budget plan.

Medicine

The Medicine link leads to an Amsterdam UMC page describing a €4,000 stipend for the Medical Informatics master’s (a proportional amount for a February start), with a 1 June deadline for September. Only “in exceptional cases” is it extended to a second year, after at least 80% of first-year credits. The page looks older than the others; contact the AMC International Office before relying on it.

Not on the list?

Dentistry, the Amsterdam University College and interfaculty programmes do not appear on the AMS hub. If your programme is not under one of the nine links, ask its admissions office directly whether any AMS route exists.
