The Short Version
Yenching's eligibility is genuinely open. Any nationality, any undergraduate major, no Mandarin required, no GRE needed. The thing most people get tripped up on is the two-track application system — whether you need an internal university nomination before you can apply to Yenching directly. That's what this page focuses on.
Citizenship
Nationality & Citizenship
Yenching is open to applicants of all nationalities. There are no country exclusions. The program explicitly includes mainland Chinese applicants, Hong Kong and Macau residents (HMT track), and international students from anywhere in the world.
Each group follows slightly different administrative processes, and mainland Chinese applicants have earlier decision timelines — but the academic eligibility criteria are the same across the board.
Age Limits
Age: The Unofficial Reality
Yenching does not publish a hard age limit. But the data from admitted classes tells a clear story: no admitted scholar has been over 29 at time of entry (with exceptions for the Zhuoyue Excellence track for distinguished mainland scholars). The average entry age is 23.
The program is designed for people who are early in building their China-focused careers — people who still have a long arc ahead of them to apply what they learn.
If you're 27 or 28
Don't self-reject. There's no published cutoff. Scholars in their late twenties have been admitted. Your application needs to make a compelling case for why now is the right moment in your trajectory for this program — but age alone is not a reason to not apply.
Field of Study
Academic Background
Your undergraduate major doesn't matter — and this is genuinely meant. The six concentrations cover economics, history, philosophy, politics, law, and literature. Engineers, scientists, pre-med students, lawyers, and social scientists have all been admitted. What matters is that you can articulate a coherent China Studies research interest that fits within one of the six concentrations.
You do not need a China Studies background. You do not need prior China-related coursework. What you need is a clear answer to: "why does your future work require serious engagement with China?"
Any undergraduate major
STEM, humanities, social sciences, law, medicine — all welcome
No prior China background needed
No China Studies coursework, no China travel, no connections to China required
GRE / GMAT
Not required. Do not submit one.
Prior Mandarin ability
Not required for admission. Mandatory Mandarin class once enrolled.
Degree Status
Degree Requirements
International applicants
Your bachelor's degree must be conferred by August 31 of the enrollment year. You can apply in your final year as long as you'll have your degree in time. Applicants who already hold a master's degree may also apply — prior graduate study doesn't disqualify you.
Mainland Chinese applicants
Mainland Chinese applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduates at the time of application. Graduating seniors applying in their final year qualify. Graduate students and recent mainland graduates should check the current official guidelines, as specific rules apply.
Minimum GPA
Yenching does not publish a minimum GPA. Strong transcripts help. But admitted scholars come from a wide range of institutions and GPA profiles. Your essays and research proposal carry more weight than your GPA once you're above a basic threshold of academic competence.
Language Requirements
English Proficiency
All instruction is in English. If English is not your first language, you need to submit an official test score. For the 2027 cycle the test is expected to need to have been taken after roughly September 1, 2025 (to be confirmed — official 2027 dates not yet published).
Accepted English Tests & Minimum Scores
Important: test date cutoff
For the 2027 cycle, expect your English test to need to have been taken after about September 1, 2025 (the exact cutoff is to be confirmed once official 2027 dates are published). Older scores are not accepted regardless of the score. If your existing score is from before that date, you need to retake. Plan ahead — test slots fill up.
What about Mandarin?
Mandarin is not required for admission and is not evaluated in the application. Once enrolled, all scholars take a mandatory Mandarin language course. You'll learn some basics. But don't worry — the academic program runs in English, and scholars who arrive with zero Mandarin do fine.
Application Route
The Two-Track Application System
Before you do anything else, you need to figure out which track you're on. This determines how you apply — and whether there's an internal university deadline you could be missing right now.
Track 1: Partner Universities
There are 13 designated Partner Universities. If your school is one of them, you cannot apply directly to Yenching. You must first go through your university's internal nomination process. Your school selects a limited number of candidates to put forward. Only those nominated students can then apply to Yenching.
Track 2: Direct Application
If your university is NOT on the Partner University list, you apply directly to Yenching through their online portal. No internal nomination required. No university approval. You just submit your application.

Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, MIT, Stanford, LSE = Direct Application
These schools are listed as Cooperating Universities — they have a formal relationship with Yenching, but they are NOT Partner Universities. Students from these schools apply directly to Yenching, the same as any other non-partner university. There is no internal nomination process at these schools for Yenching. If you're at one of these institutions, you do not need your university's permission or endorsement to apply.
Always verify the current list
The partner university list changes periodically. Check the current official Yenching Academy website to confirm whether your school is a Partner University before assuming which track applies to you.
Second Chances
Reapplication & Deferral
Reapplication
Yenching explicitly welcomes and encourages reapplication. If you were rejected or withdrew, you can apply again in a subsequent cycle. In your new application, be specific about how you've grown, what you've done since, and why your application is stronger now. Don't just resubmit the same materials.
Deferral
Deferral policy is not addressed on the official website. If you've been admitted and need to defer, contact the Yenching admissions office directly and explain your circumstances. Don't assume the answer is no — but don't assume it's yes either.
