Apply for your permit as early as possible
Sweden's migration authority (Migrationsverket) processing times can be 2–4 months. Apply the day you receive your admission and scholarship letters — do not wait until you have found housing or confirmed other details.
What Permit You Need
Non-EU citizens studying in Sweden for more than 90 days need a student residence permit (uppehållstillstånd för studier). This is not a visa — it is a separate permit issued by Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency. You apply online before you travel.
EU/EEA citizens are exempt
If you are an EU or EEA national, you do not need a residence permit. You can enter and study freely. You may need to register your right of residence if you stay longer than three months.
Documents Required
What to prepare before applying
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay. Scan every page with a stamp or visa.
University admission letter
Official letter from your Swedish university confirming acceptance to a specific programme.
SI Scholarship award letter
Proof of funding. This satisfies Migrationsverket's financial means requirement — you do not need a separate bank statement.
Passport photo
Recent, passport-standard photo. The Migrationsverket online portal accepts digital uploads.
Application fee payment
SEK 1,500 (approximately €130). SI scholarship does not cover this fee — pay it yourself online.
Step-by-Step Process
Create a Migrationsverket account
Go to migrationsverket.se and create an e-service account. All applications and case tracking are done through this portal.
Submit the online application
Apply for "residence permit for studies." Upload all documents, pay the application fee (SEK 1,500), and submit. You will receive a case number immediately.
Attend biometrics appointment (if required)
Most applicants must visit a Swedish embassy or Migrationsverket office to give fingerprints and a photo. Book this appointment immediately after submitting your application — slots fill up fast in some countries.
Wait for the decision
Processing takes 2–4 months on average. Track your case online. Do not book flights until the permit is approved — you cannot enter Sweden to study without it.
Collect your residence permit card
Once approved, collect your physical permit card at a Migrationsverket office in Sweden (not your home country). You can enter Sweden with the approval decision letter, then collect the card within the first few weeks.
Register at the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket)
If you will stay longer than one year, register at Skatteverket to get a personal identity number (personnummer). This is essential for opening a bank account, accessing healthcare, and signing a lease.
The personnummer is everything
Sweden runs almost entirely on the personnummer — the personal identity number. Without it, you cannot open a Swedish bank account, get a library card, sign a mobile contract, or access most public services. Apply for Skatteverket registration on your first week in Sweden, even if the process takes a few weeks to complete.
