Heinrich Böll Scholarship Deadlines 2027: Two Windows, No Exceptions
The online portal opens about six weeks before each deadline. For 2027 that means 15 January to 1 March, then 15 July to 1 September. Late or incomplete files are not considered.
Böll runs two application rounds every year, with deadlines on 1 March and 1 September. The info sheets say the portal is accessible at least six weeks before each deadline, and that deadlines are binding with no exceptions. Dates below were checked on 6 October 2026 against the official scholarships page and application page.
Application windows
| Round | Portal opens | Deadline | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn 2026 | 15 Jul 2026 | 1 Sep 2026 | Closed |
| Spring 2027 | 15 Jan 2027 | 1 Mar 2027 | Next round |
| Autumn 2027 | 15 Jul 2027 | 1 Sep 2027 | Published |
The Foundation does not publish a clock time on the pages we checked. Do not plan to submit at 23:00 on 1 March. Aim for the last week of February.
Everything must arrive by the deadline — including expert reports that your referees email directly to the Foundation. A complete application from you plus a missing report from your professor is an incomplete application.
What happens after each deadline
The official FAQ says it takes four to five months from application to decision. The info sheets give this pattern:
| Stage | 1 March round | 1 September round |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1: written review | March–April | September–October |
| Stage 2: interview with a lecturer | By mid-May | By mid-November |
| Stage 3: committee interview | May, June or July | December, January or February |
| Award notification | June/July | January/February |
| Payments start | At the latest 1 October | At the latest 1 April |
Stage 1 months are inferred from the stage 2 dates; the info sheets do not give a separate stage 1 end date.
Which round should you choose?
Match the round to your German semester start. Payments from the 1 March round start by 1 October, which fits a winter-semester master’s or PhD. The 1 September round starts payments by 1 April, which fits a summer-semester start.
Most international master’s programmes start in October. So for most readers, the realistic target is 1 March 2027 for an October 2027 start.

A note on changes from 2027
The English application page carries a line saying that from 1 March 2027 the Foundation will only accept applications for “first-cycle programs”. The German study-scholarship page explains the domestic track as first-degree study (bachelor’s, Diplom, Staatsexamen) and still lists a separate track for international master’s applicants. The German info sheet A1-1a (September 2026) also limits domestic applicants to first-degree study but still lists master’s study as eligible for EU and non-EU applicants educated abroad. Our reading, which the Foundation has not stated in so many words, is that the change concerns domestic applicants. If you are applying for a master’s, ask studienwerk@boell.de to confirm before you invest months.
A footnote in info sheet A1 says non-EU nationals “may apply only at irregular intervals” and points to the website for current dates. The scholarships page currently lists the spring and autumn 2027 windows for international master’s and PhD applicants. Recheck it before each round.
